Islam Islam is the second most popular religion in the world. It began in Arabia and was revealed to humanity by Muhammad. Those who follow Islam are called Muslims . The Muslim building for worship is called a mosque. Very often mosques have a domed roof with a tall tower called a minaret . Mosques have bare walls and very little furniture there.

The Mosque The Mosque is situated on Kronverk Prospect at the Petrogradskaya Side near the Troitsky Bridge. The foundation stone of the Mosque was laid on the 3 rd of February 1910. The Mosque was erected between 1910 and 1914 by the architect Nickolay Vasiliev , Stepan Krichinsky and Alexander Gogen . The design of the Mosque was based on Middle-Asian Moslem architectural motives .

The building of the Mosque is crowned with the huge ribbed dome. The architectural ensemble of the Mosque includes two minarets. The facades are embellished with citations from the Koran. The walls are faced with grey granite. The interior was created according to the traditions of Moslem architecture. The columns are faced with green artificial marble. The citations from the Koran are also engraved on the huge magnificent chandelier in the center of the praying hall.

Kolomyazhsky mosque Kolomyazhsky mosque - the second largest mosque of St. Petersburg, located in the north of the city near Kolomyagi on Parachute street. The mosque was opened in 16 th of July 2009. This mosque was designed by Rashat Ahmethanov . Islamic Institute is located in the two-storey brick building. Only men can attend University. They study Koran, Arabic language, the basics of Islam.
