It is situated on the cost of strait of Pa-De-Kale on the top of white cliff.

It was founded in the 12 th century and was described as the “Key to England”. Dover Castle has played a prominent part in national history. The first castle was built by Dyke William of Normandy in 1066.

Between 1179 and 1188 Henry II completely rebuilt the massive, walls, and the towers. The castle was the first in Europe to be built concentric design.

Massive rebuilding took place at the end of the eighteenth century during the Napoleonic Wars. William Twiss, the Commanding Engineer was responsible for the remodeling of Dover Castle. With Dover becoming a garrison town, there was a need for barracks and storerooms for the additional troops and their equipment. It was created a complex barracks ever built in Britain.

During the second war in 1939 the tunnels were converted first into an air-raid shelter and then into a military command centre and underground hospital.

In 1940 Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsey directed the evacuation of French and British soldiers.

In 2000 outside the tunnels was erected a statue of Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsey in honour of his work on the evacuation and protecting Dover during World War 2.
