In the territory of Russia the Olympic Games took place in 1980 in Moscow. Then there were the twenty second summer Olympic Games, and in 2014 — the twenty second winter Olympic Games. For carrying out the Olympic Games such cities competed with Sochi, as Sofia (Bulgaria), Borjomi (Georgia), Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan), Salzburg (Austria) and some other.

Official mascots of the winter Olympic Games 2014 were Polar bear, Hare and Leopard. Originally inhabitants of Sochi selected a mascot of the main sports events the image of a dolphin on skis which was created by the artist Olga Belyaeva, but then national competition on creation of a new mascot was announced. It is remarkable that the image of Hare was created by Silvia Petrova, the schoolgirl from the Chuvash Republic.

For the winter Olympic Games in Sochi the record quantity of awards for all history of winter competitions, namely 1300 medals was made. On their production about 3 kg of gold, 2 t of silver and 700 kg of bronze left. Besides, awards of these Olympic Games became also the biggest in the history as have diameter of 10 cm, and thickness of 1 cm.

The Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014 broke all records on the sum spent for preparation of competitions and infrastructure. So, the initial estimate made 12 billion dollars, and the actual size of expenses exceeded this sum almost for 300% and made 50 bln. dollars.

The main Olympic stadium "Fisht" which contains 40 thousand audience has become the biggest Olympic facility in Sochi. The three of leaders on the capacity of the audience included such objects, as the Big ice arena and ice arena "Iceberg". Both of these objects contain 12 thousand audience.
