My favourite writer (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
There are different hobbies in the world. Reading is one of the most popular. My classmates read different books of Russian and foreign writers. As for me, I am fond of reading, too. My favourite Russian writers are Pushkin, Lermontov. But most of all I like to read books written by English and American writers, for example, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Jack London, William Shakespeare. My favourite English author is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I would like to introduce the outstanding writer and his books to my friends.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was an artist and an architect, his mother was fond of reading and what is more she was a very interesting narrator. Conan Doyle studied at Jesuit schools but later he rejected religion. He was a student at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. There he studied together with future famous writers: James Barrie (who told a story of Peter Pan) and Robert Lewis Stevenson (who described The Treasure Island).
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began his career as a doctor but at the end of the 19th century he wrote his first stories which became incredibly popular. The first story about Sherlock Holmes was published in 1891. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle took the character of Sherlock Holmes from his professor of Biology at Edinburgh University. The professor was famous for his ability to guess the character and the past of any person basing on some tiny details. So Conan Doyle devoted his first story to his teacher.
Many people found Holmes a real person. The author received a great number of letters to his detective. He was afraid to be a writer of one character, so in 1893 Conan Doyle “killed” Sherlock Holmes. But the readers didn’t agree with this decision, they wanted to read new stories about his favourite character. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had to agree with the public and went on his writing. On the whole, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 56 stories and 4 novels about Sherlock Holmes and his friend Doctor Watson.
Nowadays there is a museum and some monuments to Sherlock Holmes. Everyone can visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London. Its address is 221b, Baker Street. The rooms are kept exactly as in the books. Visitors can sit in Mr Holmes’s armchair, try on his famous cap, hold his pipe and see his violin and his chemistry equipment. They can also visit Dr Watson’s bedroom and Mrs Hudson’s room.
There are many films in the world about Sherlock Holmes. Queen Elisabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom, considers that the best Sherlock Holmes was acted by Vasily Livanov, our Russian actor. That’s why in London you can see the monument to the famous detective with the face of Vasily Livanov. The Russian actor was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his role in 2006.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is famous not only for his stories about Sherlock Holmes. He wrote such books as The Mystery of Cloomber, The Great Boer War and The Captain of the’ Polestar’, one of the adventurous novels The Lost World and many others. I hope it will be interesting for you to read them.
