Different kinds of sport like football were in Sparta , Ancient Rome and China many centuries ago. But football we know became in England in the nineteenth century. The first match of national teams was played in 1872. At the beginning football was only a game for amateurs but in 1885 football becomes an official sport. Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was based in 1904.

Rules of football In 1863 the first rules of football were accepted by English Football Association. There are 17 official lists rules of football. The first rules were changed very many times.

In 1921 Jules Rimet was chosen as FIFA president. He named the following Olympic football competitions of 1924 and 1928 « World championships of football of amateurs » . These two competitions won Uruguay national team. Uruguay got a honor to have the first official World cup in its country. Jules Rimet

T he first World Mundial held in 1930. It was the only World Mundial which had no qualification. Only 13 national teams took part in this championship because not every country from Europe wanted to sail to South America. That competition won Uruguay national team. This World mundial was very useful. 32 national teams wanted to take part in the second World Cup in Italy. Next two mundials won Italy national team. The next world mundial held in 1950. The break was related with the second World War. In 1970 Brazil national team won World Cup a third time and got a cup forever. The new World Cup was presented in 1974 and Germany national team won it. Brazil national team won this competitions five times, Italy – 4, Germany – 3, Uruguay and Argentina twice, England, France and Spain won it once.

The first European Cup held in 1960 in Paris. The first champion of Europe became USSR. The most titled teams are Spain and Germany. They won European Cup three times. France won it twice. USSR, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Denmark, Greece won European championship once.

There are a lot of awards for footballers, but the most important award is « Golden Ball » . UEFA and magazine « France Football » give it to the best player from a European club. Pele and Maradona are kings of football but they don’t have this award because they didn’t played in Europe in their best years of career. In 2010 FIFA and UEFA united their « Golden Balls » and now this award names « FIFA Ballon d`or » . The most titled footballer is Lionel Messi . He has four « Golden Balls ». There are three footballers of USSR national team who took it. Their names are Lev Yashin , Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov .

There are 4 positions on the field : goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards. Goalkeepers are the only players who can play by hands. They have to defend their gate from a goal. Defenders make everything to save their half of field from opposites. Midfielders help defenders and forwards. Some midfielders defend and another attack. Forwards must strike to an opposites gate. You can see best footballers of their positions down.

Russian football. For a long time Russian national team wasn’t a strong team. In 2006 we asked Dutch manager Gus Hiddink to be a trainer of our national team. Thanks to him we took part in Euro 2008 and reached semi-final. It is still our greatest achievement. This summer we`ll take part in World Cup in Brazil. We trust in our footballers and wait for a victory.
