Introduction.
In our research work we want to concern the topic “You shall not make for yourself an idol. (Don’t make an idol!” Why this? It`s just because every parent is worried about his child`s hobbies and passions. And during the period of teenager`s emotional worries his tastes may strongly change.
Thus, based on the statistics and conclusions of our research, we`ve made such a piece of work. Let`s begin with determining the problem from the scientific point of view.
During his youth, a man has a difficult task of solid understanding of himself, his place in the world and in society. The main lines of this period concern such questions as «how do I look in the eyes of others», «what am I», «what I like», the need to find himself, his purpose, individual abilities and requirements.
One of the leading places among the factors of socialisation is taken by mass media (the media), from the child`s birth it comes into his life so actively . The media has strongly entered into our life and from their screens and printed pages us through the images of their presenters, actors, musicians and heroes of the films they show certain behaviors, reflecting the values. Adolescence and early youth are the periods of the total TV addiction.
Idols of modern youth.
Today there is a huge increase in the variety of films, actors, musicians, thus, the expanse of choice of modern youth idols has been broadened. According to the recent Russian center of public opinion studies of «Idols of modern youth»,, the leading positions are taken by pop and rock stars (47% of respondents expressed a preference for them) and successful businessmen (38%). 22% of the votes-athletes, 10% - the current President, and quite a few, only 4% of respondents, believe that the idols of modern youth are Russian politicians. You should also note that the word “idol” changed its meaning and now it is no always a perfect example to follow, but the average person who has achieved quick success and prosperity.
Based on the said above, we have defined the main points of the research work: which mass media images the modern youth like, what criteria they use to make their choice and how conscious it is?
Youth is a part of society. If you do not understand the society in which young people live, it is impossible to understand the youth and its specific problems. Confucius advised to listen to the songs sung by the people to understand how people live and what do they hope for. So where to search for an idol, but in art? Music, cinema, literature offer a lot of material for study and thinking. The word “idol” itself changed - now it is increasingly a perfect example to follow, and the average person who has achieved quick success and material prosperity.

For youth cinema and television films are not only means of entertainment, but also a source, a translator of social norms, samples, models of behavior.
Analysis of the literature on the impact of media on youth of today shows that cinema and television films are very significant factor of socialization of teenagers, giving certain model of social-typical behaviour and introducing distortions in view of moral values.
Our survey.
My girlfriend and I have made a survey to identify the most popular characters of native and foreign film industry, artists, musicians, and also to identify significant and important personalities of the 20-21 centures.
The survey aimed to identify the idols of today's youth.
Tasks:
1. Determine the content of the meaning of the word «idol» in the perception of youth
2. Find out who of youth is the basic model (the leader of public opinion, «idol» etc)
80 students took part in the survey.
up to 12 years - 36%,
from 13 till 15 years - 43%,
over 15 years - 21%.
1. The first question, «Do you know what does the word «idol» mean? 100% of respondents answered positively, then they gave it the definition «hero». The answers were the following:
Ideal - 46%,
One whom you imitate - 28%,
One whom you love and admire - 11%,
Authority - 9%,
One who has achieved a lot - 6%.
2. 97% replied affirmatively the second question, «Do you have an idol?» , and the other 3% answered with the words from the Bible «Do not make for yourself an idol».
3. The third question, «Who is your idol (in a field of activity)?» answers were found as follows:
Musicians – 32%
(Basta, Michal Jackson, A.Vorobyov, P. Kirkorov, Machete, V. Brezhneva, Loc Doc) – for their voice, appearance, lyrics.
Actors – 24% (Keira Knightley , Ashton Kutcher, Brad Pitt, Natalia Oreiro, Angelina Jolie)- are liked for their beauty.

Sportsmen– 14%
( Е. Isinbaeva, М.Sharapova, Е. Pluschenko, А.Ovechkin, А.Kabaeva) - for patience, will to win
Family – 9%
(father, mother, brother, grandmother, grandfather) – for life experience, advice.
Show business – 7%
(Ksenia Sobchak, D. Dibrov, Tina Kandelaki, Pavel Volya) - for talkativeness, sharp mind.
Politicians – 6%
(V.Putin, D.Medvedev, V.Zhirinovski) – for education, point of view.
Fashion industry representatives – 5% ( Kira Plastinina, Natalia Vodyanova, Tyra Banks ) – for beauty, ideas
The most popular film genre among students 14-15 years is comedy. The greatest number of votes: «Univer», «Interns», «Real boys», «ACE Ventura», «The best film», «the Simpsons,» «Tom and Jerry», «Shrek». Students aged 16-17 also chose a Comedy, but in the list of preferences a number of other genres appeared , psychological, military, historical, thrillers. The largest number of elections: «Taxi», «Step forward», «Harry Potter», «We are from the future», «Masha and the Bear», «House MD», «Avatar», «Twilight».
Among favorite actors the students have chosen the most attractive modern Hollywood movie stars - Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp, John Kerry, Leonardo Di Caprio, Keanu Reeves, and young popular Russian actors, which can be seen on almost all modern dramas on all TV channels - Mary Kozhevnikov, Darya Sagalova, Sergey Svetlakov, Michail Galustyan, Ivan Urgant, Garik Harlamov.
Among favourite film characters such people were chosen as: Neo, Jack Sparrow, Shrek, «Interns».
Among the musical performers students preffer Lady Gaga, Christina Аgulerra, Rihanna.
Speaking about outstanding and famous personalities of 20-21 centures, teens have chosen:

These people often appear on TV, on advertisement panels, on magazines and newspapers covers. Internet is full with their photos. People admire them and go into rhapsodies over them; they make idols of them in the truest sense of the word.
Fans are able to do everything to get a precious autograph from their idols. Sometimes they are ready to pay plenty of money and nearly kill each other only to take a picture with a celebrity.
A great danger is hidden in such actions, because it is wasting of time preventing from performing really important things in life. It is impermissible for a believer to be busy with such trifles. In the majority of cases celebrities wallow in the mud; they can do completely shameless things. These people are always in the limelight. Their life, behavior, actions, words are always under the spotlight, they are supposed to be an example for everybody, first of all for our children. They use charity as a cover for their reputation and at the same time they make a show of their private life, discuss their sexual orientation in public, publish their naked photos, drink, take drugs and so on.
Young people are attracted by the successful and famous people, who achieved a high social status. But not everything that attracts our attention and interest should cause the desire to follow that. Every person has his consciousness and certain freedom. You can say that you admire and like a certain singer or an actor, but you have to understand that his life is not your destiny.
Who are these idols?
Who is the idol and what does this word mean? If you look in the dictionary, then it explains: 1. The object of admiration, adoration.
In philosophical dictionary there is no specific explanation of who the idol is, but it means something ideal and perfect, the dictionary decrypts the «ideal» as: subjective and objective way of life arising in the process of purposeful activity of a person, expressed in the forms of consciousness and the will of man. The sphere of ideal form of natural, social, cultural and spiritual existence.
We believe that the idol is now necessary and urgent, as an idol helps a person to assert himself, supports his selfconfidence. The idol is a man whose best qualities you try to adopt, while remaining yourself and making everything even better.
We interviewed pupils of 8 - 11 classes. Children under 12 years old consider that they do not need idols, and we understand their choices , as at their age there is no need to think about it. At the age of 13 - 14 years the majority of our students think that idols are needed, and more than half of them already have their own ideal or ideals. Idols are actresses, singers, modern bands, actors, famous players and the like. The guys who need the idols, have such arguments : we find ourselves in the idols , they need to be the best and smart and adopt good qualities, idol gives them the opportunity to assert themselves, they need someone to admire and take as an example, it is necessary that the younger generation would learn from the older ones to be distracted and not to go out, not to go to discos, not to take drugs, not to get involved in a bad group, not to smoke, not to drink, not to make the friends with those who will hurt.

Idol may be the one who was able to influence not only the industry but also on the minds of mankind. One of the brightest personalities of the last years can be considered a Western outrageous star - Lady Gaga, whose photos media publishes everywhere. It just she who gave to modern youth the opportunity to express all their emotions, which were created and accumulated by modern society. Of course, in addition to the outstanding talent to sing, Hague has what is called a beautiful word "shocking”. This was the impetus for the other stars that were not previously resorted to special ways to dress and behave differently. In general the principle of "not like all” can be considered the main passage in the modern world of teens. The desire to stand out is driven by a majority of the younger generation and is becoming a fundamental not only in the choice of clothing and music, but also behaviours.. And, perhaps, within a few decades, the photos Lady Gaga can be seen in some Museum along with photos of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.
For many people Lady Gaga`s photos and videos became the subject of immitating and an example of how you can stand out from the crowd of other teenagers. Is it so bad? Probably not, the fact is that it gives the opportunity to self-determining for the younger generation. The main thing is that this manner of that Lady Gaga photographs and regularly exhibits on display in social networks wouldn`t become a way of life, because it is absolutely not intended for adult life.
My Idol |
I think almost everyone in the world admires someone. It is especially true for young people. Most of them have idols. They try to look and act like them. It is useful when a person looks up to someone with positive qualities or to someone who has done lots of good and worthy things. Idols are mostly found in such spheres like music or cinema. My idol is Michael Jackson. I like all his songs and I admire his personality. I think that he was a multi-talented person. He managed to stage fantastic and spectacular shows. He was a great singer and dancer. Besides, he did a lot for poor and disabled children of Africa. I’ve read at a magazine that Michael Jackson was born in a rather poor family. There were nine children and they all lived in a four-room house. Later, when Michael Jackson became really rich and popular, he purchased a huge house with lots of rooms upstairs and downstairs. Many critics said his behavior was eccentric. He never gave interviews, he was rarely seen in public, he often wore a face mask to protect himself from germs, and he slept in an oxygen capsule, which he believed would help him to live longer. However, his manager says that he was simply very shy. He started singing in public when he was only five years old. Since then he had been working like a grown-up. He had never had free time to play with other children and he led a very stressful life. He felt safe with animals and children and he feared crowds. He was a bit childish too. He loved kids’ stories and his favourite hero was Peter Pan. No matter how eccentric or childish he was, I think he was a clever man, who managed to create a successfully brilliant image. |

Conclusion.
1. On the basis of the performed work we can make a generalized image of the modern youth idol. So, for young people of 17 years idol is the hero of a popular series or a movie, a successful music artist, the main advantage of which is attractive appearance and role of «a successful person».
2. Today's youth knows who the idols are, and almost everyone has his own idol, to be imitated and to be admired.
3. The largest number of idols youth finds in the sphere of music and cinema. This may be a consequence of the influence of the media, which covers not only success, but also the personal life of the stars of show business.
4. Though there is some hidden danger in some modern idols, most of them are not as bad as we think.
The very existence of idols is a good thing and maybe even useful, even if at least one person will follow i his idol, it means that all is not in vain!
And we’d like to finish our work with the lines from Yuri Vizbor’s poem:
Don’t make an idol for yourself
From very-very small details-
From situation and a flat,
The doctor whom you’re very glad,
From Sundays as the end of week,
From thoughts about your destiny.
And it’s not right time after all -
Despair and sadness to afford.
