Welcome to our Gubkin sightseeing tour. There are a lot of places to see and visit here.

Gubkin is my native town and first of all I’ll give you a few general facts about it. Its history goes back to 1939. So Gubkin is 65 years old. It’s situated in Russia and looks like every provincial town. Today Gubkin is the centre of Gubkin district. It’s one of the main economic centres of Belgorod region. The population of Gubkin is about  90.000 people.

So we are in Lenin Square. It’s the best starting point of the tour around Gubkin, the central and the most beautiful square in our town. It’s the place of parades, meetings and demonstrations. On the right you can see the City Hall and near it is the building of the Town Palace of Culture.

We are turning to Lenin Street. It`s the oldest street of our town. It’s quiet and cosy. I always admire with these nice two-storeyed buildings. It’s fine to walk around its lime alley. All these spasious yards with asters in small front  gardens give it modest charm.

We are now in Victory Circus. The monument in the centre of it  was erected in honour of the Victory of the Soviet  people in the Great Patriotic War. Russian people fought courageously against fascism. Every fourth citisen of our town was killed during the war.

In the way of vegetation Gubkin has a lot of pleasant  patterns.  Shadowy alleys, magnificent public gardens, bright flower beds can be seen everywhere. But  there is no end to perfection for our masters of landscape. I am sure that in 100 years the lawns and bushes in our streets will look like English ones. Oh, our famous elephants! It’s a famous place to take photos.

Well, Gubkin has grown greatly during the last twenty years. And it is growing very fast. As a matter of fact, many new blocks of flats and shopping centres are built in Gubkin every year. It`s especially noticed in the micro- district “Zhuravliki”.

Of course, Gubkin cannot boast historical sightseeings but golden domes of the Spaso- Preobrazhensky Cathedral attract your attention.

You are interested in the sphere of entertainment, aren’t  you? Oh, there are a lot of places in Gubkin to go and enjoy oneself. The restaurant “Swan”, the cafe “Tale” are at your service.

Let’s have a stroll in the park, shall we? Enjoy giddy attractions in “Chudo-Yudo–grad”! The sport ground on the opposite side is the tennis court. Our citisens are fond of going in for sports. The biggest sport place is the Sport Centre “Kristal”. It s a beautiful modern Sport Palace which includes the football stadium, skating-rink, etc. A lot of children and grown ups join the clubs in “Kristal”.

We are passing the Lyceum number 5. It`s my school and I can tell a lot of nice things about it. In fact there are 3 institutions of higher education 18 schools and 1 technical secondary school in Gubkin. It can be said that the town is a big campus.

Our town is growing and developing thanks to the local enterprises.

Gubkin is the town of miners. And there’s one of the biggest mining plants. It is called the Lebedinsky Mining and Dressing plant. Approximately one half of Russian raw material export in 2003 was provided by it. The main branch of the Lebedinsky Mining and Dressing plant is open-pit mine, where more than 45 million tons of rock are extracted per year. Iron ore, sand, clay and chalk are produced for further processing. Among the various development projects the Lebedinsky Mining and Dressing plant produces hot briquette iron. We are proud of the huge enterprise but we are not blind to the problems of it. The citizens of the town are environmentally concerned. We now talk almost as much as anyone else about environmental protection.

Other problems? They are just like in any other town of Russia. Unemployment, contrasts between rich and poor, drinking. I’m against drinking and idleness. I’d better choose another way to make my life full, bright and happy.

And now the final item of our tour. I’m sure you are looking forward to the grandiose sight. From here you can survey the quarry of the plant. Isn’t it fantastic? It looks like a cosmic landscape, eh?
