Nikolai Kuksenkov was born on June 2, 1989 in Kiev, the capital of the ex-Ukrainian SSR. However, the athlete began a career in the independent country, and when the boy was 2 years old the Soviet Union disappeared from the political map of the world . A dozen of sovereign states appeared... In November 2012, Nikolai Kuksenkov surprised fans of gymnastics stating his desire to change the Ukrainian citizenship to the Russian one. A lot of people were surprised, except of his father, Julius. He is a coach of his son. He understood that decision would allow Nikolai to realize his potential and to be successful.

In April 2013 Kuksenkov received a Russian passport and became a citizen of the Russian Federation. After moving Nikolai settled in Vladimir, where he was taken "under his wing" by Victor Ivanchuk , who worked as a director of the School of the Olympic Reserve. Kuksenkov’s first international debut under the Russian flag was in the XXVII Summer Universiade which was held in Kazan ( Tatarstan , Russia). In addition to the first places in the team and individual all-around, Nikolai took part in the end of the Universiade which gave the third medal to him. H e was awarded by the President of Russia. The choice in favor of gymnastics was not accidental. Nikolai’s father had a lot of experience in coaching and he instilled love to gymnastics in his son. Under the guidance of his father, soon Nikolai became the gold medalist of the Junior European Championships, and in 2011 won the "bronze" in the adult European Championship. In addition, he was a champion of Ukraine several times.
