I. The aim, tasks and the project products.
The aim of the project is to make a staying in Britain comfortable and safe. I have read lots of information about this country, I have studied the works of English writers and journalists describing national character of the English, their traditions and lifestyle and finally I have visited England this summer and saw everything with my own eyes. I`ve made friends with English teenagers and now knew much about life in Britain. Now I would like to give some advices and maybe to destroy some " myth" about this country.
Tasks:
• to learn more about English climate, food, character, language;
• to make up the questionnaire;
• to analyze the questionnaire;
• to compare the use of some words and words combinations in English and Russian languages;
• to sum up given information.
The project products are:
research work about England and the English, consisting of a slide presentation and a brochure for tourists.
II. Introduction.
It is not surprising that millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. It broadens their outlook, gives a possibility to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, and of course, travelling by itself is a good rest. Students of our school and their families also travel a lot. (116 students took part in my review)
As you can see our pupils regularly travel in abroad.
84 % of them want to visit the UK:
I`m sure my research work and my advices will be useful for them.
III. Weather on the British Isles.
The first thing we usually do before to pack our suitcases is looking through the weather reports. The results of our interview show that the weather on the British Isles has a bad reputation. It is considered as cold, rainy, foggy.
Clarify this, I turned to official website of the British Meteocentre. And as you can see on this slide they are right. The Annual Rainfall Amount Review shows the intensive character of British rains.
The British say that they have 3 variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon, and when it rains all day long. They also say: " If you don`t like the weather in England, just wait a few minutes." It`s because the weather in Britain is very changeable and fickle.
So don`t forget to take an umbrella and a rubber boots if you go to this country. British like to talk about the weather and if you want to talk to someone in the street begin your conversation with the topic about the weather.
IV. Traditional food.
Our eating habits play a very important part in everyday life so let`s speak about food. The most of my schoolmates name tea, porridge and turkey as typically English dishes.
But what in reality :
The busy lifestyle nowadays makes the English choose a quick breakfast consisting of cereals and cornflakes. But after the breakfast you can expect a few nice toasts with marmalade and a glass of orange juice or a traditional cup of tea. The typical fish and chips are sold everywhere. Snacks and sandwiches are still very popular. Triangle sandwiches have become an integral part of British cuisine. Sandwiches with cucumber are considered to be the most classical ones. Soups are served rather seldom. Spices and herbs are used very rarely. The lack of varied food is considered by tourists as bad English cookery.
But to be there and don`t taste fish and chips it`s like not to be in England at all. If you like European cuisine you`d better go to French, Italian restaurants but there are very expensive. If you prefer home-cooked food I recommend you to buy products in supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury`s, Morisson. The prices are reasonable there.
V. Features of national character.
I asked my schoolmates about English character in their points of view.
For centuries the British have been known as superior, aloof and unsociable. But I read a lot of comments in Russian and foreign forums written by people living there and they say that ordinary British people are friendly and sociable. And now after my 3 week staying there I can prove that British are very hospitable people: they can always invite someone for a cup of coffee or tea. Also I can mark that they are a well-disciplined people. So if you want to have a friend in England be sociable and polite.
But the most part of our shcoolchildren was right,one of the main features of the English character is conservatism.You can see red mailboxes, double-decker red buses, bear fur hats for the royal guards, they do not even take them in boiling hot and they are still dressed in the form of the 16th century. Judges still sit in robes and powdered wigs of the eighteenth century, and Professors of England's oldest universities wear black robes on and rectangular caps.
So if you are in this country respect its traditions.
VI. English is a "confusing" language.
If you look up the dictionary, you will read the words «problem» in Russian and the "problem" in English are identical. It is often misleads translators. In fact, the perception of this word in the English and Russian differs. It would be much more correct to use the word «issue» and «question» instead of «problem». The English in Russia, hearing that we need to solve some problems, tense and expect trouble. So do not use the «problem», if you do not expect any problems, but it is only an ordinary situations. If you need to discuss something, use words: question, subject, topic, point, issue.
Visitors often use "OK" in England. Russian tourists use it where it is necessary, and where it is not necessary. In England, the word OK not as widespread as in other states. Moreover, in different countries its meaning is not the same. In the United States, and in many other countries it, "says" that "everything is fine", "excellent" or just "OK." In Japan, its traditional meaning - "money", in France - "zero". In Portugal and some other countries, it will be perceived as rude.
Improper use of this word can lead to misunderstanding. Once one Russian man came to the Venezuelan consulate to obtain a visa. The gates were closed, and the guard said: «It's open from ten to twelve, OK?», Which meant "Works from 10 to 12, you know?" Russian said: «No, that's not OK, I need a visa», having mean: "Not OK, I need a visa." So they did not understand each other, and as a result Russian man left without a visa.
Therefore, while you are in England, do not abuse 'ok'.
VII. "Positive Thinking"
British perception of events is based toward a positive view of what is happening. Even in the most difficult situations every Englishman did not lose hope for success.
With great irony Russians tend to perceive standard phrases taken in the English community in real estate. The term “cozy” is interpreted as “a tight squeeze”, and “the hole in the wall”, but if you see the description of "beautiful countryside", you should understand that without a car you can’t even buy any bread, the house is in the countryside where infrastructure is not developed completely.
So if you would like to rent a house or a flat there don`t forget about English "positive thinking"!
