Introduction
Gorno-Altaisk is a very beautiful town. I like to walk along its streets and look at buildings, parks and … monuments. There are many nice monuments in Gorno-Altaisk. So I wondered: why do we need the monuments? To find it out I was to know about:
The first monuments
Since ancient times people have been making monuments and statues. Everyone knows the Sphinx guarding the Egypt pyramids. This is the entrance into a rock temple Abu Simbel. It is in Egypt too. There are about 900 Moai statues on Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean. The terracotta army was found in China.
Types of monuments
There is no any official classification of monuments so I’ like to present my own classification. There are monuments to:
Monuments to people are the most popular. There are monuments to poets and writers, singers and actors. There are monuments to people of different professions: cosmonauts and teachers, plumbers and water carriers, firefighters and scientists, street cleaners and doctors.
A family is the most important thing in the life of every man. These are the monuments to a family.
We remember the tragic events of the World War II. There are monuments to brave Russian soldiers in the center of Moscow and in every town and village of Russia.
There are monuments to favourite film characters and cartoon characters.
There are monuments to animals and birds. I’d like to tell you a story of true love and true devotion. It happened in Tolyatti in 1995. A young and happy family had a German shepherd dog. One day the man and the woman died in a car crash. Their dog didn’t leave the road. People made a doghouse for him and gave him food to eat. The dog was waiting for his owners for a long time. In seven years he died too.
There are monuments to food we like to eat: an apple, chocolate, sausage, a cucumber, fish, a varenic, a pelmen.
There are monuments to different kinds of transport: a train, a car, a plane, a helicopter and a bike.
Monuments of Gorno-Altaisk
There are nice monuments in Gorno-Altaisk too. This is a monument to a union of Russian and Altain people. This is a monument to an Altain artist and scientist G.I. Choros-Gurkin. I like to walk in the Victory Park. It has great monuments to Altain soldiers. These are the monuments to V.I. Lenin and A.S. Pushkin.
Conclusion
There are different monuments. They are big and small, beautiful and ugly, strange and funny. So, why do we need the monuments? They remind us about great people. They remind us about tragic events we must remember. And they make our cities, towns and villages more beautiful. So, enjoy the monuments!
