A Legend about Valentine In the late Middle Ages in France and England the life of St. Valentine gradually began to grow into legends associated with the secret wedding couples. According to the Golden Legend, in those dark times the cruel Roman emperor Claudius II came to the conclusion that a single man , without wife and family, will fight better in the battle for the glory of Caesar, and forbade men to marry. St. Valentine was a common doctor and a priest who sympathized with unhappy lovers and under the cover of the night he sanctified marriage of loving men and women. Very soon Valentine's activities became known to the authorities , and he was put into a prison and was sentenced to death. In imprisonment Valentine got acquainted with the beautiful girl, a daughter of a warden - Julia. Before his death Valentine wrote to his girlfriend a declaration of love, where he spoke about his love and signed it " Your Valentine." He was executed on February 14 of the year 269 .
