Isaac Levitan (1860-1900)

Isaac Ilyich Levitan , the great Russian artist, became the first painter of the Russian scenery, who revealed all its beauty. He is a real poet of the Russian countryside. He continued and developed the traditions of painters of the Russian realistic school — Savrasov , Polenov , Serov . Levitan found significant meaning and poetry in what would seem the most everyday subjects.

He was born in Lithuania in a very poor family. In the early 1870s, his family moved to Moscow. He entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1873 when he was thirteen. His teachers were the famous artists: Perov , Savrasov and Polenov

He was a master of landscape and never introduced figures into it.

Though if you look at the Autumn Day in Sokolniki , You can see a lonely figer . Everything seems to bring out the loneliness of the figure in the centre: the trees losing their leaves, the remote, indifferent sky, the path going off into the distance. But the fact is that it was not Levitan who painted the figure. It was Checkov's brother Nicolai who did it.

We can see a quiet day in the middle of autumn. The sun is shining, but not so bright. We can see an open Russian space: fields, woods, a river. The blue sky with white clouds on the horizon converges with the line of the forest. The narrow river banks crosses the picture vertically, helping the viewer's eye view the perspective. The artist shows the movement of water with clear vertical strokes. We can see a birchwood . Levitan , like many artists, loved birch and often depicted them in his paintings .
