In Russia,99% of schools are free state schools and 1% are private schools. The most famous is Samson.

Education is compulsory from seven to eighteen years of age. There are three main stages: Primary (Years 7-10 ); Basic (Years 11-16 ); Secondary (Years 17-18).

Russia has a national curriculum. In public schools almost all subjects are obligatory. But except of high school and lyceums, students can choose additional subjects which they would like to study, for example, foreign languages.

Students do tests in core subjects from the age of 7. At 16, they take exams called SFC (State Final Certification) in a variety of subjects. If students stay at school, at 18, they take exam called USE (Unified State Examination).

About 90% of students tend to get higher education. There are a lot of state universities and institutes of Commerce.

The setting up of a national curriculum has probably raised standards in Russia. Some schools also have serious problems with uniform and discipline.
