Four centuries after he wrote them, the works of William Shakespeare continue to entertain and intrigue the audiences around the world.
Shakespeare’s genius permanently shaped the English language, while his knowledge of the human mind and heart speaks to us across the years. In the words of his friend and rival playwright Ben Jonson, «He was not of an age, but for all time».
Whether you are discovering Shakespeare or are simply eager to learn more about his life, his works, how they were first performed, and the times he lived in, we hope you will enjoy exploring the resources of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington.
The library contains the world’s largest and finest collection of Shakespeare materials and major collection of other Renaissance books, manuscripts and works of art.
The Folger opened in 1932 as a gift to the American nation from Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger.
Located a block from US Capitol, the library - the home to the world’s largest S collection – is famous the engaging marble bas-reliefs of S scenes on its Art Deco façade. Inside you will be transported through time by its warm Renaissance interior of oak paneling, vaulted ceilings, carved wood and stained-glass windows.
The Folger was designed by Philadelphia architect Paul Philippe Cret and is listed in National Register of Historic Places.
The Folger serves a wide audience of researchers, visitors, teachers, students, families and theatre- and concert-goes.
The Folger is a world-renowned research center on Shakespeare and an early modern age in the West. Its conservation lab is a leading innovator in the preservation of rare materials. Its well-known public programs include plays, concerts, literary reading, family activities and exhibitions. Advanced scholars participate in variety of Folger Institute seminars and colloquia.
The Folger also publishes the illustrated completely reedited Folger edition of Shakespeare’s plays.
The Folger welcomes researchers (known here as «readers») from across the US and around the world. To apply for reading privileges, please select the category that best reflects your needs and submit you application materials to registrar@folger.edu .
