Soapmaking
No-one knows quite when soap was discovered. It was, however, a VERY long time ago. In Europe during the Middle Ages, soap was very expensive, and in some locations, it was heavily taxed. Only the rich could have much of it, and few people knew how to make it, because the guilds kept tight control of their recipes and the market for soap.
Marketing and social changes made soapmaking at home a rare event, but change is again on the horizon.
Soapmaking at home has become popular for many reasons. Items such as natural components make consistent results possible for the home soapmakers.
My own trek into soap making began when I was thinking about original presents for my nearest and dearest for New Year. I had decided to try making soap, and started shopping for soaping ingredients and materials. After researching for quite some time as to how it is done, and learning safety procedures, I made my first batches.
With all this soap making process being so popular and with a great number of recipes available in the Internet I was interested to find out what sort of soap most people use. So, as you can see from the picture only 10% use natural homemade soap and 90% are quite satisfied with commercially available soaps.
To me, soap seems almost magical, every time I make it.
Almost everyone can learn how to make soap at home. There are fairly simple recipes for beginners. They use ready-soap base or good baby soap. In any case, you can get useful and beautiful product that fits your skin. Homemade soap can also be a wonderful gift.
Make useful handmade soap has now become very easy. Many stores sell special for soap base and other necessary ingredients for soap making.
As I’ve already said soap making is very popular, there are even shops which sell readymade soap with different additives. So I decided to find out why people usually buy it. The results are not shocking, but still: 56% buy homemade soap as a present, there is nothing surprising it, as usually a piece of such soap costs about 200 rub, and only 6% buy such soap for everyday use, paying special attention to the natural ingredients, and 38% don’t buy homemade soap.
Today I will show you a masterclass of soapmaking.
I will need:
1) We need to melt the soap base. It is more easily done in the microwave. It will take about 20-30 seconds, but every 10 seconds better check to see if it is hot. To get a better result I’ve cut the soap base into smaller pieces.
2) When the base is melted, add about a third of a teaspoon of avocado oil.
3) Add about 3 drops of yellow dye.
4) Now to get a beautiful color, drip about 4 drops of red dye.
5) Allow the soap for 3-4 hours, so it is well frozen, and can be immediately used.
Here it is! A beautiful homemade soap!
When you start your soap making process with ready-made soap bases, the hardest part is already done for you. All you have left to do is the fun part. Choose hundreds of mould shapes, decide what designs you want your soap to be. You might even want to choose a special additive for your soap such as lavender seeds, or oatmeal. In just a matter of minutes you can create wonderful soaps for your home or for special gifts. But beware - soap making is addictive.
