The subject of our issue is the influence of the Internet and social networks on people. We are going to discuss social networking benefits and some of its negative aspects.
According to Facebook.com, 500 million users worldwide spend 700 billion minutes each month on Facebook.
Social networking has become a major part of our society. Even big businesses and celebrities are jumping on the social networking bandwagon. Many people wake up each day and check social websites first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. 550 million or one in 12 people worldwide have a Facebook account.
As of late 2010, 61 percent of all online adults are Facebooking, a whopping increase from 35 percent just two years ago. This includes nearly all young adults (86 percent), the majority of teens (71 percent) and even one in four 8- to 12-year-olds. According to the latest research two out of every three 8- to 24-year-olds Facebookers are using it daily. If it were a country, Facebook would be the third largest in the world behind India and China.
Since people are spending such a large amount of time surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society.
Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online. This is because the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to gather and share first-hand information and experiences about cooking, golfing, gardening, developing friendships professional alliances, finding employment, business-to-business marketing and even groups sharing different information. The topics and interests are as varied and rich as the story of our universe.
Examples of very large social networks would include Facebook, MySpace and others that have members from across multiple continents and many different countries. Members may have very different lifestyles and interests, but because of the large number of participants, almost anyone can find a group of others who share their particular interests.
There are many, many different groups on the major social networking sites, and even smaller communities may have multiple groups to help their members share specific interests.
Another way that we can interact with others who share similar interests is to become friends with each other in the community. In this case, the word "friend" does not necessarily mean the same thing that it does in our real, day-to-day lives.
An online friend may be someone with whom we share only a few interests, but who is a person we want to interact with easily. By becoming a friend, it generally means that the online community where we are members gives us the ability to "keep up" with each other's activities, to send private messages, chat in real time, and even be informed by email when they do something that we've told the system to tell us about.
Only a few of the activities in which we participate online are synchronous, with real-time chat being the best example. If two are more people are online at a social networking website, they may choose to open a window and use the chat feature to carry on a real-time conversation.
Most online social networking activities are asynchronous in nature. This means that we don't have to be together in space or time. We don't have to congregate at the same location and we don't have to be there at the same time as the others in order to get the full benefit of what is happening.
Examples of these activities include...
Each of us can do the above-mentioned things (and more) whenever it suits us, and still get the benefit of being a part of the community and sharing our particular interests with others.
Popular social networks of Russia is online environment used to facilitate social interaction, such as content sharing, views, experiences and relevant data. Social networks of Russia is a community of Internet users with access to the network depending on the interests and geographical reference.
What are the most popular Russian websites? Here is a list of top 6 best websites in Russia based on a combination of Alexa rank ( a listing of all sites on the Web, sorted by traffic) and Quantcast statistics, which provides detailed statistical information about a website's audience for website owners, advertisers and publishers, which helps them to make business decisions. The list covers social networking sites.
Vkontakte.ru: V Kontakte is the most popular social networking website in Russia. It is the Russian analogue of the network service Facebook.
LiveJournal.Ru: A virtual community and networking site very popular in Russia and among the Russian-speaking diaspora abroad. It is a platform for accommodation of online diaries, communities, personal and collective blogs, publications, records, comments.
л Odnoklassniki.ru: Russian classmates website to share memories, class reunion info, photos and more. Gives the possibility of virtual communication, view photos and destination of the real meetings.
Facebook.com: the world top networking site has been becoming more and more popular in Russia. It is the English-language social network with the Russian-language version, which was founded in the beginning of 2004 to Harvard students, and has received world popularity among different social groups. It has free services, the possibility to communicate with friends, classmates and colleagues. There are a lot of famous show-business stars and celebrities on Facebook.
Twitter.com: Many Internet users would like to create their personal blog on the Internet. You can create a blog on Twitter for a few minutes without any skills and constantly share short messages with friends.Twitter is used by many popular Russian people and organizations including President of Russia (KremlinRussia_E), Neznashka, Rogozin and Creative_Link.
VK.com: another social networking site to keep friends, classmates, neighbours and colleagues in touch.
There are many ways in which we benefit by participating in these online communities.
We Never Need to Lose Touch Again
The advent of social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace (among others) has made it far easier for us to stay in touch with the people we met in kindergarden and to stay up to date on the events happening in the lives of people you would have lost touch with otherwise.
A Leg Up for the Socially Handicapped
Another positive effect of social networking on the Internet is that it happens through a computer screen - a shield allowing shy people to express themselves without fear of rejection and for people with low self-esteem or poor body images to meet others and form relationships without surface impressions getting in the way.
Romantic Relationships
In addition to people who meet and begin dating each other online, Internet social networking allows people in relationships to stay in touch when separated by long distances or to have long, romantic conversations through instant messaging clients, Internet voice chat or web cams without racking up prohibitively expensive phone bills.
New Avenues for News
The sprout-like growth of Internet social networking has also created new sources of information for people who are not controlled by the mass media or the world's leaders. Internet social networking users provide personal product reviews, how-to guides and "citizen journalism," such as "on the ground" updates about events happening in disaster areas.
Helping Small Businesses
Traditional mediums such as print magazine ads and radio commercials can cost thousands of dollars. Social networking allows small business owners to connect with prospects and clients for free, costing nothing but time and energy. Marketers at small companies can post coupons to Facebook groups or run promotions on Twitter. Besides, companies also can get positive and negative feedback directly from consumers.
As with everything else, there are some dangers that may be associated with social networking, and we are advised strongly to use common sense when interacting online.
Many of us share our real names and where we live, but that may not be a wise thing for everyone. We must consider how much of our privacy we want to maintain and how to maintain our safety in the real world.
It is a very bad idea to announce that you are going to be gone on a two-week vacation, if you have your real name and location on your profile page. There are people who will take advantage of that information and you certainly don't want to come back home from a great vacation to find that you've been robbed.
Anything you post on any of these online communities may become public knowledge, and once they search engines index the sites, that information may be impossible to remove.
Anyone can create a profile on one of these communities and they may not be at all what they pretend to be. You should always exercise caution when sharing personal information with anyone you don't really know.
Unfortunately, social networking has a dark side that is filled with pedophiles, stalkers and abusers.
A lot of children are becoming more involved with social networking sites. Many of these children and teens have let their guards down and see online friends as people they can trust. Children are easily persuaded, and pedophiles use this trait to become involved with the child.
Stalking has become a serious issue on social networking sites. Social networking gives abusive partners a way to monitor their former or current partners, send upsetting or threatening messages and locate where they work or live. Stalkers use a technique called "doxing." Doxing involves collecting images of the person, searching the Web for related accounts, emailing friends and portraying themselves as long-lost friends. The goal is to get phone numbers, addresses and work locations of the victim. Stalkers can then use this information to harm or steal from their victims.
4.1 A negative aspect of social networking is that it can be addictive
Have you heard of the term Internet Addiction Disorder? What about Facebook Addiction, Internet Junkie, Net Junkie, or Nethead? Any of these labels sound familiar? What about "online-a-holic?”
These unflattering labels are used to categorize and identify an individual's obsessive dependence with the Internet, more commonly known as Internet Addiction Disorder, or IAD.
Spending too much time on social networking sites can cause people to lose focus on tasks at work or around the house.
Research on Internet addiction originated in the US by Dr. Kimberly Young. In 1996, she presented the first paper on the topic at the American Psychological Association’s annual conference held in Toronto entitled, “Internet Addiction: The Emergence of a New Disorder”. Since then, studies have documented Internet addiction in a growing number of countries.
It is difficult to estimate how widespread the problem is. A national study conducted by a team from Stanford University’s School of Medicine estimates that nearly one in eight Americans suffer from at least one sign of problematic Internet use.
4.2 Signs of internet addiction
Dr. Kimberly Young has developed the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) to diagnose the disorder. Meeting five of the following symptoms were considered necessary to be diagnosed.
1. Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous online activity or anticipate next online session)?
2. Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction?
3. Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop Internet use?
4. Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use?
5. Do you stay online longer than originally intended?
6. Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet?
7. Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet?
8. Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)?
Other Symptoms Include:
- Failed attempts to control behavior
- Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities
- Neglecting friends and family
- Neglecting sleep to stay online
- Being dishonest with others
- Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior
- Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome
- Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities
4.3 How to fight internet addiction
Since there is so much to do online, from games to chatting with friends, it's easy to become addicted. While abstinence is a viable option for other addictions, most people need to use their computer daily for work or school. Instead of abstaining from the Internet completely, there are some tactics you can employ to end an Internet addiction.
Accept that there is a problem. Addicts can't work on scaling back Internet use if they believe what they're doing is fine. Once you admit you have a problem, working on the addiction can go a lot easier.
Find your triggers. There are usually actions or events that can set off an Internet addict. If you use the Internet the most while you're stressed, find another outlet, such as meditation or a cup of tea.
Record how often you use the Internet. Most people don't realize just how much they use the Internet every day. Keep a journal next to your computer and log it in every time you go on the computer. Record the date, the start time and the end time of each session.
Keep a timer by your computer. Set time goals for Internet use. One hour per night should be sufficient to start. Time yourself with a kitchen timer. Make a promise to yourself to log off as soon as the timer dings. You can always finish what you were doing tomorrow. As you get used to an hour, start scaling back the time further by 10- or 15-minute increments.
Focus on healthier activities. Internet addicts often forget about their hobbies once they're embroiled in their addiction. Make a list of the things you like to do. Next time you feel like going on the computer, do one of those other things instead. Take a picnic, play basketball or take a hike in the woods. This will also help you spend more time with your family, which has likely been neglected during your Internet addiction.
A new study has shown that too much social media time on websites such as Facebook may be bad for children.
Larry Rosen, a psychologist at Cal State Dominguez Hills, has been studying the effect of technology on people for more than 25 years. And recently, he has done several studies on how social networking sites such as Facebook affect children.
As a result, Rosen found in his study that teens who logged onto Facebook constantly were more narcissistic since social networking is exactly what the narcissist seeks out. They can share themselves constantly on their terms using social networking.
The study: “Poke Me: How Social Networks Can Both Help and Harm Our Kids,” shows both the negative and positive effects social networks have on today’s youth and adults.
Among Rosen’s negative findings:
Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies.
- Young adults who use Facebook more frequently show more signs of psychological disorders, including antisocial behavior, mania and aggressiveness.
- Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on health of all children, preteens and teenagers by making them more prone to psychological disorders and future health problems.
- Preteens, teenagers and young adults have a more difficult time studying for exams because they carry their mobile devices everywhere with them, giving them an out when they are bored with studying.
- Students who checked their Facebook accounts while studying did worse on exams than those who stayed away from the social network while studying.
There were also some positive findings in Rosen’s study. Those include:
- Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing “virtual empathy” to their online friends.
- Online social networking can help introverted children learn how to socialize behind the safety of their computer or mobile device.
6. CONCLUSION
To crown it all we’d like to say that social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter have been created for people who want to keep in touch with each other. They provide instant access to different groups and individuals allowig people to interact with each other paying no attention to their geological location or timeframe. The other thing that we should keep in mind is: while social networking sites offer considerable advantages they also contain some significant disadvantages, which potential users should be aware of before signing up.
Naturally, each of us must weigh the pros and cons and decide for ourselves whether or not we want to participate on the social networking sites.
Are internet social networks good or bad? You are the only person that can decide that for yourself and your family.
We firmly believe, that you can still enjoy the great advantages of using the Internet if you know how to do it with skill and caution.
