Environmental protection

     The scientific and ecological progress in our country has brought not only rapid industrial development, but it has caused the pollution of the environment. Today natural resources are exhausted; some species of flora and fauna are disappearing.  The ecological balance of the planet is disturbed.

       In my opinion the most serious ecological problem today is the shortage of clean water. Industrial pollution has made many sources of water undrinkable. Rivers, lakes and even seas have become poisonous. I live in Razdolnoye and I know that people suffer because of dirty water. When I went with my parents to the seaside last summer, I was surprised that the water was not blue, but brown with rubbish floating in it.

       Our river is polluted too. Some years ago it contained a rich variety of fish, but thousands of fish die every ear as a result of the dumping of waste in the river by factories and plants.

       Air pollution is another important problem.  We pollute the air we breathe. Every day a huge number of plants and factories emit lots of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The great increase of the cars has caused an increase of air pollution.

       Another source of global danger is acid rain. The acid rains damage life in lakes and rivers and destroy forests.

      But in my opinion the most ecological problem today is the environmental safety of nuclear power stations.

  Radiation affects people’s health. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are. People all over the world protest against nuclear tests and nuclear weapons.

      The list of serious ecological problems can be continued. One of the biggest environmental problems is depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the dangerous rays of the sun. Because of the ozone holes the dangerous rays get through the atmosphere causing skin cancer and other serious diseases.

        Environmental protection, in my opinion, is the most burning problem today. People have destroyed our environment by building huge cities and power stations, developing industries, cutting down trees.  Today there are a lot of International organizations. The most famous of them are: “Greenpeace”, “The World Wild Fund”, “Friends of the Earth” and others.

       I am in the tenth class, but I have already chosen my future profession. I want to be an ecologist. I think my generation will work out such ways that will help to control the pollution.

      To protect nature people should change their attitude to it. People should stop taking from it everything they need and give it their love instead. If we do nothing, we are heading for disaster! If we save our planet, there might be some hope for the future.  There will be peace, friendship and love on the Earth.
