They may be found in almost every home. APPLICATION OF Incandescent lamps are widely used in house hold and commercial lighting, for portable lighting, such as table lamps, some car headlamps and electric flashlights? And for decorative and advertising lighting. THE INCANDESCENT There are several types of incandescent lamps: fluorescent lamps, neon lamps, sodium lamps, light-emitting lamps (LEDs). Each type of lamp uses different gas. Thus, fluorescent lamps have limited use in homes, but they are widely used in offices, schools, and stores. Light-emitting lamps are mostly used in factories, highways, parking lots and shopping centers. Most neon lamps are used in advertising signs. WHO INVENTED In the 19th century inventors worldwide were investigating the process of creating an incandescent lamp. As a matter of fact? Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison are considered to be “the fathers” of the incandescent lamp. Edison’s lamp was the most successful as he managed to find the filament material that could produce the best light. THE INCANDESCENT Every incandescent lamp has three basic parts: 1) the filament, 2) the bulb, and 3) the base. The filament produces the light. The bulb and the base help it to do its job. The filament is made of tungsten, a strong metal that can withstand high temperatures without melting. Most bulbs contain a mixture of gases, commonly nitrogen, instead of air. The gases help to lengthen the life of the filament and prevent electricity from jumping inside the lamp. The base holds a lamp in its fixture. It also connects the lamp to an electric circuit. TEMPERATURE OF THE FILAMENT OF THE INCANDESCENT Filament temperatures depend on the filament type, shape, size and amount of current drawn. Usually the filament is heated from 2000K to 3000K. VARIETIES OF THE INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB Nowadays among the lamps with clear or frosted glass the lamps of various colours are produced for Christmas tree lights and other decorate lighting. TYPES OF ELECTRICAL CONTACTS OF THE INCANDESCENT Many arrangements of electric contacts are used. Large lamps may have a screw base or a bayonet base. Contacts in the lamp socket allow the electric current to pass through the base to the filament. THE FILAMENT OF THE INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB Some lamps have more than one filament. These filaments may be turned on individually so that the lamp produces different amounts of light. For example, a lamp may have a 50-watt filament and a 100-watt filament. Depending on whether the filaments are lit separately or together, the lamp can produce light from 50, 100, or 150 watts of electricity. |
