GLOSSARY Colledge (USA) – a course of 2 or 4 year post-secondary (undergraduate) schooling in order to get an associate’s dagree or bachelor’s degree. GCSE (UK) – most students take their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams when they are 16. Those who get good grades can stay on at school for two more years and take their A-level exams. Good A-level results make it possible for atudents to go to a university or a polytechnic.

GMAT (USA) – Graduate Managament Admission Test is a test of general skills and abilities that you have acquired over time. Graduate school (USA) – a college or university where one can study for a master ’s degree (one to two years of post-graduate specialised programmes including business, journalism, sciences, humanities, mathematics) or doctorate degree (post-graduate highly specialised course of study such as law (JD), medicine (MD), psychology (PhD), business administration (MBA) and engineering ( MEng ).

Further education college (UK) – specialises in vocational-type education leading to GNVQs (General National Vocational Qualification) though it is possible to get to university through them. Many of the courses at these colleges prepare young people for work. Polytechnic (UK) – a college of higher education, similar to a university providing training and degrees in many subjects, especially those which prepare young people for practical jobs in science and industry.

Six-form college (UK) – they are for students aged 16-18 and offer A levels. Most are attached to secondary schools and in this case most of the pupils will be from that school , although others can apply to enter.
