I. Introduction.

The aim of my work is to prove that fast food has not only cons but pros too.

The tasks are to get and analyze information about history of fast food and popular fast food restaurants, to determine pros and cons of fast food, to find out why fast food is so popular.

Hypothesis: fast food is so popular all over the world so it can’t be harmful for people.

Object: Fast food.

Subject: Its influence of man’s health.

Methods of research: - studying information

        - analysis

II. What is fast food.

Fast food is food that replace real meal: Chips, hamburgers, hot dogs, pop corn different soft drinks. We can buy fast food in the fast food restaurants, cafes, supermarket and shops and even in the school canteen.

 III. History of fast food.

The American Indians made pop corn a long time ago. They introduced corn to the first settlers. In 1620 when Pilgrims had a Thanksgiving dinner they invited the Indians, who brought popcorn with them. Since that time Americans continued to pop corn at home. But in 1945 a new machine was invented that changed the history of the product. And soon movies started selling popcorn to make more money. The famous American habit of eating popcorn at the movies is well-known.

The original name of the hot dog was the frankfurter, after the German city of Frankfurt. In the United States frankfurters, sausages on buns, were first sold in the 1860s. But for Americans the name “dachshund sausage” replaced the frankfurter. In actual fact, a dachshund is a dog from Germany with a very long body and short legs. Dachshund sausages first became popular in New-York especially at baseball games. The men walked up and down the rows of people and shouted “Get your hot dachshund sausages here!” And in 1906 the newspaper cartoonist Tad Dorgan saw the men with the dachshund sausages and got an idea for a cartoon: he drew a bun with a dachshund inside – not a sausage but a dog. The cartoonist didn’t know how to spell the word “dachshund” and under the picture he just wrote: “Get your hot dogs!” The cartoon was a sensation as well as the name.

The hamburger has connection with the German town of Hamburg. German immigrants to the United States introduced the “hamburger steak”. At the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, hamburger steaks first appeared.

The Coca-Cola story began in Atlanta in 1886. John Pemberton invented a new drink. Two of the ingredients were the South America coca leaf and the African cola nut. Pemberton couldn’t think a good name of the drink. So his partner Frank Robinson propose the name Coca-Cola. Thirty years later the famous Coca-Cola bottle design first appeared.

 The recipe  of Coca-Cola is a secret. Today they sell Coca-Cola in 195 countries. Hundred of millions people drink it every day. It has the  most famous trademark in the world.  

IV. Fast food restaurants.

Today you can find fast food restaurants in different countries. But which restaurant was the first?

In 1937 the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mark, opened little restaurant in California. They served hot dogs and mils shakes. In 1945 they have 20 waiters.. All the teenagers in town ate hamburgers there. When the 1948 year came they got paper boxes and bags for the hamburgers. They put the price down from 30 to 15 cents. There were no more waiters – it was self- service. So it was cheaper and faster.

In 1960s the McDonalds company opened hundreds of McDonald’s restaurants all over the States. In 1971 they opened restaurants in Japan, Germany and Australia.

 Now the McDonald’s company opens a new restaurant every 8 hours. There are more than 14000 restaurants in over 70 countries.

Some world famous fast food restaurants are:

Burger restaurants: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, In and Out Burger

Soup and sandwich shops: Panera Bread, Au Bon Pain, Subway

Southern cooking: KFC, Long John SilversT, Popeye's

Coffee shops: Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks

Mexican chains: Taco Bell, Chipotle, Qdoba

Chinese and Asian restaurants: Panda Express

Pizzerias: Dominos, Papa Johns, Sbarro, Pizza Hut

V. The reasons of popularity.

1. Fast food restaurants are popular because they propose breakfast, lunch and dinner meals that don't cost a lot of money.  

2. It’s easy to find.  You can find these restaurants on many street corners and in shopping centers. Families stop at Pizza hut on the way home from a day trip. Teenagers meet at McDonalds for a burger at lunchtime. Busy office workers buy tasty sandwiches at Subway.

3. Fast food is easy to eat. You can even eat a burger while you are driving. Try to  do that with a bowl of spaghetti.

4. Fast food looks nice and tasty. It is made of food of bright colours: red tomatoes, green salad, yellow buns, brown steaks, white onion.

VI. Pros and cons of fast food.

People who eat too much fast food can have healthy problems. In the United States, China, Japan a lot of people are overweight. Some experts believe that high-fat and high-sugar food change children’s behaviour.

The good news is that fast food is changing. It is become healthier. Most fast food restaurants have healthy choices like salads and lean chicken sandwiches.

VII. Conclusion.

In my work I try to show that fast food fast food has not only cons but pros too.

I think fast food is not bad if you won’t eat it too much.
