. The koala is a small bear-like, tree-dwelling, herbivorous marsupial which averages about 9kg in weight. Its fur is thick and usually ash grey with a tinge of brown in places. The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning "no drink" because it receives over 90% of its hydration from the Eucalyptus leaves (also known as gum leaves) it eats, and only drinks when ill or times when there is not enough moisture in the leaves. i.e. during droughts etc.

Kangaroos are herbivorous, eating a range of plants . They are active in the early morning and late afternoon. Kangaroos of all sizes have one thing in common: powerful back legs with long feet. A kangaroo’s tail is used to balance while hopping and as a fifth limb when moving slowly. A kangaroo population can increase fourfold in five years if it has continuous access to plentiful food and water. Kangaroos of different types live in all areas of Australia, from cold-climate areas and desert plains, to tropical rainforests and beaches.

Tasmanian devils ( Sarcophilus harrisii or Sarcophilus laniarus ) live only in Tasmania and are found from the coast to mountains. Their natural habitat is dry bush and scrub land. According to fossils found in Australia, at one time these animals occurred on the mainland, but became extinct about 500 years ago, even before European settlement began. It is believed that the dingo has ousted the Tasmanian devil from Australia.

Eucalyptus trees are quick growers and many species reach a great height. The leaves and oil of the eucalyptus plant are used for medicinal purposes. Members of the genus can be found in almost every region of the Australian continent, because they have adapted to all of its climatic conditions; in fact no other continent is so characterised by a single genus of tree as Australia is by its eucalyptus. Many, but far from all, are known as gum trees in reference to the habit of many species to exude copious sap from any break in the bark .

Acacias are cultivated for decorative and economic purposes. The Australian acacias are commonly called wattles—their pliable branches were woven into the structure of the early wattle houses and fences. They are valuable for lac , for perfume and essential oils, and for tannins; some are used as ornamentals.

CONCLUSION Australia is a land like no other, with about one million different native species. More than 80 per cent of the country’s flowering plants, mammals, reptiles and frogs are unique to Australia, along with most of its freshwater fish and almost half of its birds. Australia’s marine environment is home to 4000 fish species, 1700 coral species, 50 types of marine mammal and a wide range of seabirds. Most marine species found in southern Australian waters occur nowhere else. Australia’s geographic isolation has meant that much of its flora and fauna is very different from species in other parts of the world. Most are found nowhere else.
