The first Christmas cardСлайд 2
The first Christmas card for sale in the shops was produced in Britain by Henry Cole, in 1843. Cole asked John Calcott Horsely, a painter,to draw a Christmas card. Then it was printed. The words on the card were: A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You
Слайд 3
Mr Cole' s card was not an immediate success. But in 1846, 1,000 copies of it were printed and sold.. Much later, in the 1860s, English printers started to produce thousands of cards. By 1880, the Post Offisce was asking people to post early for Christmas'

As printing methods improved, Christmas card became much more popular and were produced in large from about 1860. An engraved card by the artist William Egley, who illustrated some of Charles Dickens's books, is on display in the British Muscum. By the early 1900s, the custom had sprea over Europe and had become especially popular in Germany
Слайд 5
The first cards usually had pictures of the Nativity scene on them. In late Victorian times, robins (an English bird) and snow-scenes became popular because the postmen in that time were nicknamed 'Robin Postmen' because of the red uniforms they wore. Snow-scenes were popular because they reminded people of the very bad winter that happened in 1836.

In the 1910s and 1920s, homemade cards became popular. They were often unusual shapes and had things such as foil and ribbon on them. These were usually too delicate to send through the post and were given by hand.

Nowadays, cards have all sorts of pictures on them: jokes, winter pictures, Father Christmas, or romantic scenes of life in past times. Charities often sell their own Christmas Cards as a way raising money at Christmas.

St Nicholas lived nearly 700 years ago in Myra, in Asia, and he was a bishop. His parents were very rich. When they died, Nicholas was rich, too. But he was a good man. He used all his money to help poor people. So how did St Nicholas become 'Santa Claus'? One day, Nicholas heard that a poor man had to sell his three pretty daughters. That night, Nicholas put three bags of gold through the man's open door. The man's daughters were now safe. Another time, Nicholas threw some gold coins down a chimney at midnight. The coins fell into a shoe, which was drying near the fire. Nicholas did not tell people what he was doing. But after he died, people learnt his secret. It became the custom to give presents on his special day - 6 December. It was said that the presents came from St Nicholas. SANTA CLAUSСлайд 2
In the 16th Century in Europe, the stories and traditions about St. Nicholas became very unpopular. But someone had to deliver presents to children at Christmas, so in the U.K., he became 'Father Christmas', a character from old children's stories; St. Nicholas became popular again in the Victorian era when writers, poets and artists rediscovered the old stories. The UK Father Christmas and the American Santa Claus became more and more alike over the years and are now one and the same. Some people say that Santa lives at the North Pole. In Finland, they say that he lives in the north part of their country called Lapland. But everyone agrees that he travels through the sky in a sleigh that is pulled by reindeer, that he comes into houses down the chimney at night and places presents for the children in socks or bags by their beds, in front of the family Christmas tree, or by the fire place. Most children receive their presents on Christmas Eve night or early Christmas morning, but in some countries they get their presents on St. Nicholas Day, December 6th. St. Nicholas putting the bag of gold into a stocking is probably where the custom of having a tangerine or satsuma at the bottom of your Christmas stocking came from. If people couldn't afford gold, some golden fruit was a good replacement - and until the last 50 years these were quite unusual fruits and so still special ! BUBNOV DENIS 6”А» SANTA CLAUS
