Ust-Ilimsk

Ust-Ilimsk is located on the Angara River that is flowing out of the Baikal Lake. Ust-Ilimsk is in the northern part of Irkutsk region in the middle of the taiga.

  Our town is rather small. About 92 thousand people live here. It is a young and modern town. It's only 38 years old. In the 1960s and 1970s, the young people from Belorussia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldavia, Germany, Bulgaria, Sweden and other  countries came to build Ust-Ilimsk, the hydro-electric power station and the Wood Industrial Complex. The town has got many blocks of flats, shops, chemist shops, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. There are galleries, libraries, a museum, a cinema, a cultural center, sports centers, a big church and a theater.

   We live in the north and the winter lasts here for almost 7 months from October to April. We have to wear thick clothes and, in our houses, we have the heating on all the time. Sometimes, the temperature outside is 45 degrees below zero, and the children don't go to school. In winter, people are fond of skating, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, playing ice hockey, making snowmen. Most of all we like the New Year holidays.

 In summer, it is usually warm. In June, it doesn’t get dark until about 2 o’clock. We have got “the white nights” as in Sankt-Petersburg. In this season, people like swimming, sailing, jet skiing, hiking, fishing and hunting. Autumn and spring are very short in Ust-Ilimsk, but the nature here is great in these periods.

  I was born in my native town and love it for its beauty very much.
