Today we are going to speak about English-speaking countries, their traditions, symbols, holidays. And, of course, you’ll learn some interesting facts about Christmas in different countries.

Now it’s time to speak about different symbols of these countries. First of all we’ll get acquainted with their flags.

Flag of Great Britain is a rectangular cloth blue, crossed by two diagonal lines of red with a white outline and located on top of a broad red cross with a white outline, aspect ratio - 1:2. Called the Union Jack flag (Union Jack).

Flag of the United States of America is a panel with seven red and six white horizontal stripes. In the canton of blue - 50 five-pointed stars of white. 13 stripes reminiscent of the early period of the history of the American flag (1775-1783.) Where each state (there were 13) corresponded to one lane and one star. 50 stars in the canton represent the 50 states. The aspect ratio of 10:19.

Canadian flag is a rectangular panel with an aspect ratio of 1:2, which consists of three vertical stripes - red, white, and red. In the center of the white stripe maple leaf red.

Australian flag is a rectangular cloth blue with a ratio of 1:2 with a picture of six white stars - five stars in a constellation of the Southern Cross on the right side of the cloth, and one placed under the big star in the upper corner near the staff of the flag of Great Britain.

As you know Christmas is celebrated not only in English-speaking countries but all over the world. If you are interested in Christmas celebrations in other countries, now you have a chance to look how it is celebrated in China, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Greece, Spain, France.

In China, not Christmas tree is decorated , and the so-called "trees of light" that is decorated with  lanterns and flowers.

The main heroine of Christmas in Mexico is a Christmas tree decked with bright lights and colorful balls.  It is worth noting that  Santa Claus in a traditional Mexican celebration of Christmas is not featured.

December 25, Mexicans, after great celebrations in the previous days spent at home with family and friends.

By Christmas, prepared well before the holiday, already two months in shopping centers appear dressed as a Christmas tree (a arvore de Natal), and begin to sell Christmas decorations. Then, on the streets there is a huge amount of illumination that makes the evening look like a day.

In Germany, preparations for Christmas begin before December falls. But the real celebration starts from 6th December, St. Nicholas Day, known here as "Nikolaustag". On the night of 5th December (St. Nicholas Eve) children put their shoe or boot outside the door, a tradition practiced in many other European countries. The Christmas tree is an integral part of German Christmas celebrations. It should be kept in mind that the Christmas tree actually originated in Germany. A unique aspect of the German Christmas decorations is that, kids cannot take part in the beautification of the Christmas tree. It is believed that the tree has some mysterious spell for all young eyes that rest on it before Christmas Eve.

If you come to Greece at Christmas, you will have the opportunity to attend a wide variety of events and festivities. In the country's major cities, such as Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, Heraklion, etc, the municipal authorities organize music concerts, theatrical performance, and a number of other cultural events. Christmas in Athens is a fantastic time of the year. The largest Christmas tree in Europe is lit in Syntagma Square, the location of the capital's Christmas village, where little elf houses sell candy and children can take part in a number of activities. There is no limit to Christmas fun in Greece! In many parts of Greece, people hang a pomegranate above the front door of their house. By the New Year, when the fruit will have dried, Greeks throw it on the ground so it breaks, and step into their house on their right foot. According to tradition, this brings good luck for the year to come.

Christmas in Spain is full of the usual Christmas festivities, but there is one tradition, not at all common elsewhere. Named "Hogueras" (bonfires), this tradition originated long before Christmas itself. It is the observance of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. It is characterized by people jumping over fires as a symbolic protection against illness. This fire-jumping can be seen primarily in Granada and Jaen.

In France, Christmas is a time for family and for generosity, marked by family reunions, gifts and candy for children, gifts for the poor, Midnight Mass, and le Réveillon.

The celebration of Christmas in France varies by region. Most provinces celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December, which is a bank holiday. However, in eastern and northern France, the Christmas season begins on 6 December, la fête de Saint Nicolas, and in some provinces la fête des Rois* is one the most important holidays of the Christmas season. In Lyon, 8 December is la Fête de lumières, when Lyonnais pay hommage to the virgin Mary by putting candles in their windows to light up the city.
