A Visit To the Earth
They were a good space team called “Quarto” from the Planet of Alfanor, large and beautiful. They had been given a task to explore the Earth, the most strange and mysterious place in their Metagalaxy. The Alfanorians knew too little about enigmatic creatures inhabiting the Earth, but they were very curious and purposeful.
The “Quarto” landed at night. At seven o’clock they left their ship and were extremely surprised. Unbelievable! Everything around them: trees, bushes, grass, flowers, the blue sky, animals and birds – was just the same as on the Alfa nor. As if they were twins.
When the “Quarto” team saw the creatures, whom they called “people” (it means “mysterious” in the Alfanorian’s language), they were really shocked. People looked like the Alfanorians! Incredible as it may seem, they wore the same clothes, they talked, walked and worked, had houses and cars, cooked dinner and looked after pets…. At first sight the Earth seemed to be the Alfanor’s twin.
The “Quarto” spent three hundred and sixty five days with people, and the results were depressing: people were silly! They fought for nothing, they killed their brothers, they loved money and power…. They ruined the Earth and could lose everything they had. Only some people realized that they lived for something different: for happiness, for perfect truth, for love… but they were not numerous enough to save the incredibly beautiful Earth from destruction.
They left Planet Earth surprised and rather disappointed by what they had found.

Great Expectations
I don’t want to waste time making conjectures about my future life because it is something totally unpredictable. Instead I am going to reflect on the future of mankind for the direction of the further development of our society has already been set.
It is obvious that we have already stepped into computer age, and we’ll keep engaging computers in more and more spheres of our life. In spite of all the advantages of computers, we can face a real problem of misinterpreting the reality. Not only can computers become useful tools for work, but they may also replace family and other primary relationships. You may consider the computer your best friend, but the difference is that it can’t feel and respond adequately to the emotions.
I don’t believe in flying cars or colonization of other planets. However, I can say for sure that space exploration will be continued and some day it might be of great use to people. It already helps with weather forecasting and satellite search. Besides, we are very likely to run out of natural resources in the nearest future. So it would be great if we could transport metals and other things from other planets.
Overpopulation is also a troublesome problem. Now there are over 6 billion people living on our planet, and the growth of the population is exponential. We’ll keep cutting out forests to provide people with shelter. The damage will be irreversible, for it takes only 10 minutes to cut a tree and 20 years to grow it, and, as we all know, the lack of trees leads to the lack of oxygen.
The gap between the standard of living in capitalist countries and the standard of living in undeveloped countries will continue to increase, which should lead to another economic crisis.
There is also a bright side of the story. I’m absolutely positive that new medicines for dangerous diseases will be found and will also be available to people with average income.
I also have some hopes, no matter how unrealistic they may sound. I want people to have some single world religion, which will put an end to discrimination, hatred and intolerance towards someone who has a different opinion or beliefs.

An Amazing Incident
It was a warm spring evening. John Fisher had just been released from prison, where he spent a long time for hijacking, and was walking through a park when an amazing thing happened. All of a sudden a huge spaceship with flashing lights landed right in front of him, the door opened and three aliens got out. Those green leathery-skinned creatures had big eyes, and only three fingers on each of their eight arms and legs. They looked like enormous spiders. John managed to hide behind a tree so they didn't notice him.
Those aliens came from the planet Dar, which was very far from the Solar system, intending to colonize the Earth. Their mission was to check if people were strong and obedient enough to work for them. They went away to look for a person whom they could give a series of tests.
John was very excited to see such astonishing things. Suddenly a brilliant idea came into his mind. He thought he would become extremely rich if he could get the spaceship and sell it. The door was opened and the strange creatures were away, so after a while John got into it without any difficulties. He saw many glowing buttons inside, pushed one of them and the spaceship took off.
The aliens were shocked when they saw their transport flying away. John wanted to go faster and pushed another button but he made a mistake and to his disappointment the spaceship landed again. The aliens got into it in a moment, threw him out of it and thought that if all people behaved like that, they'd better not return there any more. They left Planet Earth surprised and rather disappointed by what they had found.

Dear Mrs. Salerno-Williams,
I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement published in the “Youth” magazine. I would like to apply for the position of a supervisor in one of the Eurokids camps.
I am a 24-year-old college graduate, who is fond of children and enjoys doing sports and playing different games.
During high school I played for the school girls’ soccer team. At that time I also had a lot of experience in looking after children, working as a Child Care Provider, which taught me responsibility and creativity in organizing various diversionary activities.
I speak Russian fluently. Apart from that, I took German classes in college and can communicate freely with native speakers. While in college, I also made a lot of progress in volleyball.
The last point I would like to introduce to show that my services might be of use to your camp is the fact that I have undergone a special training course, which enables me to provide first aid treatment and CPR in cases of emergency: this is crucial in working with children.
If you are interested in offering me the work, could you, please, contact me on (278) 974-8294 between 3 and 8 p.m. I will be looking forward to getting your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Ann Maple.

We Are Responsible for Those We Have Domesticated
People often think that having a pet is only fun and pleasure. But they shouldn't forget that it is a great responsibility as well. If people who buy a pet are not prepared to look after it, they can just throw it away. As a result the number of homeless cats and dogs is increasing. So a person should think twice to have a pet or not. You should choose a suitable pet. I mean, you can't keep a big dog in a small flat. You should also make sure that every member of the family would like to have a pet.
Even such a small pet as a parrot requires much care. I'd like to give some advice to those who are going to have a parrot. First of all, you should remember that parrots like any other pets need attention. If they sit in a cage all day long they may become ill. You should let your parrot out of the cage for at least two hours a day provided you keep all doors and windows closed. But you should always keep an eye on it. Parrots can learn to talk but they learn only those words that they hear most often. You shouldn't repeat the words you wouldn't like to hear from your pet.

Your Pet: a Friend Or a Room-Mate?
My dear young reader,
You are going to buy a pet, but haven’t decided whom would you like to have? The choice is difficult: fluffy tender pussies, playful dogs, parrots, tortoises, hamsters…. You should know exactly your purpose.
If you are lonely, if you need sympathy and understanding, then you need a dog, we’ll call him Rex. Rex will be the most faithful and reliable friend. He will trust and obey you and you can trust him in any situation. All Rex needs is to be fed, but if you give him more – give him love, you will have the best friend in the world.
If you have bought a cat, do not demand any sympathy from it. Cats, unlike “open-hearted” dogs, are animals “deep inside”.Outwardly your cat will seem indifferent and proud. You should not blame it – it’s cat’s nature.
If you want to be a teacher to your pet, a parrot is the most suitable. A parrot is a very curious kind of animal, so you will enjoy teaching it.
If you want just to look after a pet, you need a hamster, a tortoise or fish. They don’t need any special attitude.
I hope, you’ve understood that before choosing a pet you should think properly. Remember, having a pet is a great responsibility.

A Cat or a Crocodile?
How many times did you think before getting a pet? Were you sure you wanted one?
Many people get pets for fun. They consider having a pet to be easy work that brings fun and pleasure, but doesn’t take any extra time or extra money, or even extra work. Well, they are mistaken.
Having a cat, or a dog, or a parrot, maybe some fish, or even a pig is an exciting way to find a new friend, but at the same time your little friend takes lots of patience, love, care and time.
First, you need to choose your future friend. Should it be an animal or a bird, a goldfish or a snake? Do you want it to be large or tiny, noisy or quiet?
Make sure, that all the members of your family agree with you. Maybe your Mom or Dad is afraid of crocodiles and you consider them the best domestic animals! Then, maybe, it would be better to get something more usual, like a cat, huh?
And if you’re absolutely sure you’ve picked one up, don’t get too frustrated if it comes out not exactly what you expected it to be!

We are Responsible for Those We have Domesticated
Are you going to buy a pet? Pet owners have to be prepared to look after their pets. You should know how to choose suitable pets and to look after them properly. I am going to write an article offering advice to people who have chosen to buy a cat.
The cat is a wise pet. Cats like when people pay much attention to them. You should comb a cat every day, otherwise its wool will be in the lumps. You shouldn't let your cat sharpen the claws everywhere it wants. It is better to present it with a board to sharpen. Besides, you have to wash its eyes and ears. And if your cat walks outside, you should clean its paws after this walking. Don't wash the cat very often. The cat must have its own menu and a saucer.
I think that everything depends on the character of the cat and you should learn it. Then you'll understand what your cat likes and dislikes and knowing its wishes you'll look after it better. In my opinion, cats help to relax.
So, if you take care of your pet correctly, respect its character, you will get a real friend. And a cat will become the member of your family.

How to Choose a Dog And Look After It Properly
If you have decided to have a dog you should know some rules how to choose and look after it properly.
First of all, before acquiring a puppy you should know the dog of what breed you want to have. If you live in a flat, you should buy a small dog because it doesn't need much place.
A puppy must be healthy, curious and courageous. It should be at the age of 2 months.
When you have bought a puppy you should start to bring it up. Your pet needs to be disciplined and should obey you: it mustn't run after cats, chew everything in the flat, bark, bite and throw oneself on the strangers. During your puppy's upbringing you mustn't smack it, otherwise, your dog will become nervous and aggressive. Nevertheless, the dog must feel who the master in the family is.
You should feed your dog at the same time and prepare special food for it. You mustn't feed it with chocolate, spicy and fat food, chicken bones.
What's more, you need to inoculate your dog every year.
To sum up, you should remember that to have a pet is a great responsibility and anxiety.

Co-education Is a Disaster For Girls
Today there are different types of schools: single-sex, private, mixed, voluntary. There are a lot of opinions concerning co-education. Some people claim to think that it is a disaster for girls. But I belong to those, who think that everything has its bad and good sides. Co-education has also advantages and disadvantages.
Girls may contact with both sexes. They make acquaintance with different people. Boys’ psychology differs from girls’, and it is necessary to learn it, because such knowledge will help in future family life.
According to all these, it is more interesting and necessary to study in mixed schools.
As for disadvantages, some girls may quarrel with each other because of boys. Love and such like things distract girls’ attention from school subjects. As a result they can’t concentrate on studying and get bad marks.
In conclusion I would like to say that in spite of some bad sides of co-education I am for it, because girls should not contact with girls only, but also with boys to learn and understand their nature.
Written by Alexandra Markova
Co-education Is a Disaster for Girls: For and Against
In my opinion, co-education of girls and boys is the best way for taking knowledge, because it is more effective and interesting to study in a mixed group. So, I don't agree with the statement "Co-education is a disaster for girls". Of course, sometimes it is better because girls don't distract from the lesson and think about foreign things, boys. Maybe, girls will not try to look more attractive for them. So, probably, girls will learn new information better.
However, there are some disadvantages: girls isolated from the opposite sex, will have no experience in communicating with them but it is necessary in the society. As the girls are the weak sex they have to learn how to dominate, be able to find their place in life, be certain about themselves. So they can only learn these things studying together.
As the boys mature slowly it is more useful for them to communicate with girls to balance this difference.
To draw a conclusion I should say that boys and girls mustn't be separated because it is harmful for their development and social adaptation.
Written by Julia Safonova
Co-education Is a Disaster For Girls
I do not agree with this statement, because J think that coeducation is much more useful and interesting for both sexes. Of course, co-education has its own positive and negative sides, however, there are more advantages.
It is said that when boys and girls study together, they cannot do it very well, because they are distracted from lessons and want to talk with each other. But sometimes mixed types of schools even help students to study, because girls want to show their knowledge to boys, and boys want to know more to be cleverer than girls. Everybody tries to get a good mark, because they want to amaze others.
Besides, in our life men and women live together, communicate with each other, and girls should learn how to do it from their early youth. Co-educational schools help them to do it, prepare for adult life.
It is very difficult to imagine different parties at school, where only boys or only girls study. In co-educational schools parties and different competitions are more interesting.
From my point of view schools should be co-educational, because it is better for every student, for their development. Studying should be various and it can be so only in co-educational schools.
Written by Yulia Tarasova
Co-education Is a Disaster for Girls
It sounds very strange. I can't agree with this statement.
On the contrary, co-education helps develop a good character. Students become generous, helpful, kind. They grow up in the atmosphere of mutual understanding and friendship. Education is merry and various. Boys and girls associate with each other, know something new. Boys and girls have a purpose, they go to school willingly, with great desire.
And if girls study without boys their life will be boring and their lessons will be awfully monotonous. In the society with boys, girls can assert their character, besides, girls can compete with boys. I think, it is a very good thing.
So, in my opinion, boys and girls should study together, because they complete each other.

Subject: “The Future” cinema
Last week a new cinema with a symbolic name “The Future” opened on the corner of Green Street and Funicane Avenue. The cinema is a so called “I-max” theatre, which means that now we have an opportunity of experiencing movies in three dimensional prospect.
This is made possible by a huge screen which forms a vault over the viewers making up half of the ceiling and walls. Together with the Dolby surround sound this creates an impression that you are a part of what is going on the screen.
The seats are nice and soft and, if a movie gets too long, you will not have to move from side to side in order to feel comfortable.
Before going in to enjoy the performance you can buy pop-corn and soft drinks, which are, I must confess, a bit expensive.
However, there is a detail that ruins the perfect impression of the cinema. It is the fact that you cannot experience a movie in its full unless you sit in the middle of the hall.
The cinema is showing all the latest productions, so that if you ever get a chance of visiting it, you should do it.
