“Youth subcultures in Russia”

Задачи исследования:

1. Знакомство с различными  молодежными субкультурами и современными направлениями России.

2. Формирование уважительного отношения к представителям различных групп.

3. Формирование способности понимать чужие точки зрения, достигать согласия и сотрудничать в условиях различия взглядов и убеждений.

4. Определить отношение подростков  к разным молодежным субкультурам.

5. Объяснить связь молодёжных группировок  с жестокостью и

            наркотиками.

6. Создать образ идеальной субкультуры.

In Russia in 2008 there were 62 federal and interregional youth and children organizations which were officially registered.

One of them is the Federation of Children Organizations of Russia.

Unlike the organizations many years ago this organization is independent from political parties. The main aim is to protect rights and interests children and young people, to organize their free time, to help them develop various skills useful in their future life. Like pioneers many years ago members of this organization help disabled people, make performances for young children.

Besides such organizations there are different groups and subgroups with special interests like in many countries.

FANS

1. Football fans consider as the subculture close to criminal. It is aggravated with that fans - one of the most active teenage groups in Russia.
2. That is characteristic for fans - they, as a rule, at all do not know history of commands, but «in a course» recent events and forthcoming matches. For them great value the emotional discharge has, possibility to shout, brawl and mix different installations and styles of a life.
3. However, and these associations it is strongly separated.
4. So, for example, the group of "Spartak" team fans "Gladiators" avoids fights, but protects "younger" (beginners). They are well developed physically and propagandise «a pure way of life».
5. However among similar groupings is also such, as «coldyr fight-front» («coldyr» on slang - "drunkard"). As it is possible to guess, it are fans-alcoholics. The age category makes them 17-18 years, but is and is more senior.

ECOLOGISTS

1. Such youth movements protecting environment, in Russia are unpopular and small (only 4 %), even in Chernobyl. Actions of Russian "Greenpeace" generally are inefficient and are imitation the West. Such movements are convenient for forming at official structures: independently exist they cannot because of material difficulties and legal obstacles.

TOLKIENISTS

Movement was born thanks to hobby of youth for role games with numerous characters from John Ronald Rouela Tolkien books "Hobbit", «the Lord of rings» and «Silmarrion». Gradually movement became not only youth, but also public, having proclaimed the slogan: «Fun always, fun everywhere, even on a land, even in water». So-called "parties" pass in suits alfs, gnomes, goblins etc., - as a rule, self-made.

Popular among tolkienists pastime is "fights" with use of th. e wooden weapon

Dialogue:

 Why do teens choose a subculture?

When young Russians are bored being alone they choose a group with the same interests as all teenagers do.

They want:

-to express themselves

-to show off

-to express their identity

-to protest against the parents

-to reject everything

-to have their own values and beliefs

-to differ from social norms

-to rebel against the society (old generation)

-to try out all sort of options.

We asked this question to students of 10-a and 10-b forms.

They answered:

Melnikova Lida: It seems to the kids that the parents are always saying NO! That everything about us, our hair, our music, our clothes, the way we talk, our heroes, our dreams, all are considered bad by the generation who can’t stop patting itself on the back over how democratic and liberal it is.

Sorokin Roma: I think, the inspiration to form a youth culture comes out of a combination of fashion, style and music. And that often it’s the particularity of the music, which then gathers a group and extends and develops.

 Are all the young violent?

What is associated with the word ‘violence’?

VIOLENCE:

Youth gangs   Vandalism      Crime      Dangerous      Drugs       Alcohol

Young people are often considered violent. Youth gangs try to control the streets. People are afraid to go out at night.

We asked opinions of students of 10-a and 10-b forms about it. What do they think? Are some youth groups dangerous?

Pilysov Sasha: Violence frequently results of the frustration that people feel when they can’t integrate into society. Crime for teens is an expression of their inability to join in society. I think that the violence is a trait of the most of street groups. It’s bad. All these groups should be forbidden.

Syrdina Vika: Some people think all youth is awful. I think this opinion is wrong. A lot of teens want to change the world for the best. They help people around them. I am sure teenagers will become good citizens. But some teens smoke and experiment with alcohol, drugs. It’s really bad. I think being hippies, punks, and bikers is great. A subculture is a way of life. It is a real life of teens.

People often associate youth culture and youth violence with drug usage.

This is the attitude of students about drugs and drug addiction.

Belkina Lera: More and more teens are turning to drugs. I’m sure that almost every teenager will at one time or another has an experience with drugs. I think drugs are very bad for teens. Drugs destroy people. They‘ve got that death tag of them. It causes to loose everything, financially and emotionally. To my mind drugs ruin our dreams. They make our lives unhappy. Some teens think that drugs can help to escape problems. I don’t think so. A lot of teenagers who have drug addiction almost never believe that they are dependent. These things are often combined with family and school problems. Many teenagers get upset or depressed when they can’t solve their problems, as a result, it makes them believe that there is only one way out –to stop living and commit suicide.

The rest of our classmates say that they are all for such opinions:

What’s an idea of an ideal subculture? An ideal subculture... It must be a registered grouping with true values and beliefs, a grouping without violence, drugs, alcohol. Must be it a society of domestic people? Or a society of lovers of silence? It's clearly that's impossible. It's known, there is nothing ideal as well as a propaganda of certain ideas in subcultures from one side can't be balanced and therefore something ideal.

Such a phenomenon as subcultures does not arise spontaneously. It is always supported by certain economical conditions of a state and social climate. It's interesting to note that the countries with the much higher living level tend to have a great number of youth groupings. Russia in spite of the quite average living level loses in this attitude.

However, it is usual for the Russian to accept such phenomena as a necessary evil. It is a common knowledge that most of teens have an experience with alcohol, drugs being in groupings. Subcultures form definite way of mind and value system. Maybe this is the main reason. The feature of thhe Russian mentality is missing of personalism which explains the wilt of Russian teenagers to express themselves, express their own opinion.

To hunt down the questions we should to find the prime cause. Teenagers join subcultures because of two contradictory reasons: to express themselves and to don't differ from the others. They do it because they have not and don't know another way to do it. There are few uncomercial leisure centers, sport sections and circles. Obviously it is the government's fault.

But we live in a relatively quiet time. Teenagers are not busy with seeking livehood, they are not at war. They can't display their abilities and talents otherwise. But soon they will grow up and realize their space in this life.
