University’s history SPSUACE is the oldest higher education establishment of its profile in Russia. Its history goes back to 1832 when it was established pursuant to the edict of the Emperor Nicholas I as the Civil Engineering Institute. Since then the University has undergone transformations and changed its name several times. The present name was given to the University on June 21, 1993. During the period after the WW II, the University`s graduates participated in the restoration of the city and industrial objects much destroyed by the enemy. The economically hard period of so called “perestroika” (1990s) was gone through relatively painlessly thanks to the selflessness and hard efforts made by the core staff and University administration under the guidance of Professor Ju.P.Panibratov who occupied then the post of the Rector. Since early XXI century the number of the SPSUACE graduates is over 1000 highly qualified professionals.

Main Fields of Activity There are several main fields of activity: Providing education for young specialists at BSc and MSc levels as well as for mature students, i.e. those who have already graduated from universities or institutes: engineers and architects, scientific and teaching personnel (PhD and DSc levels) Advanced training and retraining of highly qualified scientific personnel and specialists Organization and implementation of fundamental and applied scientific research works

Scientific-Technical Library Scientific-Technical Library, one of the oldest technical-scientific libraries in Russia with over 800 000 volumes, devoted to architecture and engineering, continually being renewed with new scientific publications, periodicals and learning materials.

History Museum The historical museum has started to develop from the moment of the basis of School of civil engineers (УГИ, 1832) and continued to develop in the period of Building school (the SOU, 1842-1882). Among museum problems - revival existing before tradition of selection and storage of the best student's works on designing. Plans of creation of an information database - some kind of «electronic archive» museum are developed.

Tarasov Vladimir Pavlovich (Was born in 1938) - the singer (bass baritone), Honored artist (1975) Evgenie Evgenevich Nesterenko (Was born on January, 8th 1938 in Moscow) - the Soviet and Russian opera singer, the soloist of the Bolshoi theater, the professor, the national actor of the USSR, the Winner of the Lenin award, the Hero of Socialist Work (1988).

TODAY The University has an outstanding faculty of 629 men and women. It numbers 4 Corresponding Members and 7 Councillors of Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, 89 Doctors of Science and 357 Ph.D.s. Presently there are approximately 8400 students, among them 282 foreign students from 54 different countries of the world, concentrating their studies in science and engineering, and 243 post-graduates (among them 21 foreigners), working on their Ph.D. and DSc theses at the University.
