At the first half of the eighteenth century when Petersburg was still very young, owing to the Peter the Great’s project the city was transformed into one that looked very much like Venice and Amsterdam. Through one of the central rivers four wooden bridges were transferred. Each of them was painted a different colour. Their names are the Blue, the Red, the Yellow and the Green Bridge.

The blue bridge The blue bridge connects St. Isaac's Square with a lane Antonenko and Voznesensky Prospekt. The width of the bridge makes more than 97 meters so he is the widest in Petersburg. Thanks to the dimensions the Dark blue bridge is perceived as a part of the Isaakievsky area because of what in the literature him have christened precisely "bridge-area". The Red bridge is the only one which was made as the cast-iron bridge built on the project of the engineer William Geste. In 1737 the bridge was rebuilt. For the city transport (coaches and wagons) the special passage was laid. The last restoration of the Red bridge was conducted in 1998. Lanterns decorating and illuminative the street were renewed.

The Green Bridge For years of the existence this bridge had survived several names. Initially it, as well as "brothers", was named Green and was green in colour. In 1768 it changed its name for the Cop as it was situated near the police station. After the revolution, in 1918 the name was changed again. At this time the bridge became the People. And remained as it was until 1998, when the government again decided to return the bridge its former, original name. And now the bridge is called the Green again.
