“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” ― William Arthur Ward
We must distinguish carefully between the highs and lows of teaching ability
To begin with, all students dream of a knowledgeable/ outstanding/ well-prepared/ exemplary/ enthusiastic/ motivated/ creative etc. teacher
Let your imagination run wild and try to imagine a teacher without reproach. He/she develops a passion for a subject/ gives challenging lectures/ mentors the class on a journey of lifelong learning/ evaluates carefully
A teacher is skillful at keeping the information relevant/ tolerating ambiguity
A good teacher is able to explain sth on the spot without peering into reference literature/ add pace and humour to the class/ cheer pupils up
First and foremost the teacher’s objective is to transfer a good deal of knowledge to pupils/ impart knowledge/ pass on the torch
It is necessary to master a language/ have a good command of English
At the same time a remarkable tutor is comfortable with not knowing/ seizes more opportunities than he/she can miss
In respect to the teacher’s frame of mind, it is important to leave bad emotions luggage outside the classroom/ have no moods
One cannot deny that such qualities as human warmth/tact/sensitivity/resolve/professional detachment are of great importance
Furthermore, one should not forget that such personal qualities of a teacher as strictness/ sensitivity/ gentleness/ fairness/ understanding/ empathy/ respect/ kindness/ imagination/ patience/ tolerance/ calmness/ dynamism/ flexibility/ thoughtfulness/ sense of humour/ generosity/ enthusiasm/ simplicity/ compassion are essential to a teacher/ affect / influence the relationships with pupils
It goes without saying that the pattern of social interaction plays an important role in the teacher’s profession. Getting on well with others implies willingness to communicate/ pleasure in contact with others/ sociability/ taking an interest in pupils as people. It is important to have not only tremendous knowledge but also some sort of connective capacity
There is a grain of truth in the fact that the following significant professional qualities should be mentioned: love of performing/ intelligence/ basic teaching knowledge/ determination/ being able to help students rather than order them/gives the essential knowledge to survive in today’s society/ develops pupil’s curiosity and sense of wonder through the subject/ offers to pupils the accumulated knowledge of previous generations
By all means, a teacher should serve as a role model/ be a model to follow
Many people think that the discipline in the classroom should be rigid but others do not agree. It is vital for a teacher to be strict/ easy-going
One of the most striking features of this problem is whether to apply penalties for infraction of the rules and improper demeanour or not
I rather like the idea of guiding pupils in a calm, patient and measured way.
A good teacher makes pupils feel at home or feel at ease in school/ seeks the improvement of one’s language competences/ maintains a level of difficulty high enough to challenge but not too high to discourage
Good teachers exhibit/reveal/disclose/display the following characteristics: a sense of purpose/ expectations of success for all students
By the way it is rather complicated to predict precisely what the long-term results of the work will be
The teacher’s preparedness/ availability outside class time / the breadth of experience are also highly appreciated
It is obligatory to devise new strategies/ revive the learning process/ fulfill pupils’ potential
Guilty conscience torments a good teacher if a student retains next to nothing not long after the final exam
We must admit that unfortunately there are incompetent/ uncaring /odd/ absent-minded/ nervous persistent teachers
They display dictatorial and pedantic behaviour
If a teacher doesn’t vary from the same worn lecture notes year after year until he/she reaches retirement, he/she does a great disservice to himself/ turns children into undisciplined and ignorant pupils
Boring lessons spark no interest/ can’t lift pupils’ spirits
In this case unhappy children do not flourish in their studies/ turn into socially competent/ hard-working/ diligent/ industrious/ purposeful/morally conscientious adults/ feel frustrated and exhausted/ do well in exams
All in all good teachers are at the heart of education/ deeply concerned about the relationships with pupils/ see schools as places which offer a great opportunity to make society more cohesive/worried about pupils’ academic accomplishment/ encourage pupils to ask questions/ help them to work at their own pace/enable to investigate science/work in disciplined but not oppressive conditions
In a nutshell, educationalists, academics want educated students who have wide knowledge of the wisdom of earlier civilizations
