Do's and Don'ts of Classroom Behaviour
Since school is the place where you spend a good part of your day, it's a good idea to have a few rules regarding classroom etiquette in mind.
To begin with, it's always nice to greet your teacher and the other students when you walk into the classroom. If you go to class after the lesson has already started, it's polite to apologise to your teacher. During the lesson, you need to respect your classmates, as well as your teacher. That means you should pay attention to others when they're speaking to the whole class, and you shouldn't talk to those next to you while the teacher is trying to explain something.
Of course, all this doesn't mean that the classroom environment needs to be strict and boring. Your teacher will certainly appreciate it if you have something funny to share with the rest of the class. Also, if you have any fresh and creative ideas about a class project or trip, your teacher will be more than willing to hear about them. After all, teachers run out of ideas too! Remember, teachers were once students themselves, and they know very well that every now and then, the class needs to do something different from their usual routine and, above all, they know that learning should be fun!
41 | You should never talk when entering the class. | ....... |
42 | If you are late, you need to bring a note from your parents. | ....... |

A DREAM COME TRUE
As a teenager, my brother Al used to invent little things as a pastime. After the gadget phase, he started making toy aeroplanes out of wood or plastic. His creations were quite impressive for someone so young. His room was always full of books about famous pilots and jet aeroplanes that he read again and again. His dream was to sell his model aeroplanes in his own shop one day, so he was determined to learn all about flying, and even designed all his models on a 3-D computer programme, before he built them.
Neither of my parents opposed Al's decision. They both believed that people should be keen on their jobs, but our father wanted him to get a university degree first. Our mother thought that a good education was necessary, especially because she had doubts about if he could earn a good living with his aeroplanes. On the other hand, she couldn't see how becoming a lawyer or a doctor for example, would help Al with the job he wanted to do.
When Al finished school, he finally decided to get a degree in architecture. During his studies, AI continued his hobby in his spare time, but also got involved in other things. He played football for a while, volunteered at the school's library, and joined the drama club; though he soon decided that acting wasn't for him.
As soon as Al graduated, he and another dozen students took a tour of Europe. The highlight of Al's trip was France. He even considered moving there for a short time to improve his skills in French, but he wanted to return home to prove to himself that he could succeed as a businessman. Three years later, AI accomplished his goal, and today, he is so successful, that he has five shops in our city and is planning to open more around the country. And, who knows, maybe one day his model airplanes will be famous around the world!
41 | When Al was young, he wanted to be a(n) A pilot C computer designer B shop owner D inventor | 44 | What did Al do soon after graduation? A He lived in France for a while. B He opened up his own business. C He did some travelling. D He learned how to speak French. |

43 | While Al was at university, he A continued to build model airplanes. B got a job as an architect. C trained to be a professional actor. D worked at the university library. |

People have always had the need to set their own fashion trends, and there is no better witness to this fact than the Fashion Museum in Bath, England. With a display of original outfits dating from the 1700s to modern day, fashion enthusiasts will be thrilled to see not only authentic gowns worn by English kings and queens, but also some of the dresses made famous by the legendary Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe. |
42 | ................ A long time ago, clothes were simply a way of covering our bodies. Of course, there have always been preferences in one style or another, but fashion rarely used to define who we are. Today, things are different. Our clothes make a statement about our personality and our lifestyle. Teens, especially, associate the way they dress with the image they want to show others. It's not really about being fashionable anymore; it's rather about showing our identity through our choice of outfit. |
43 | ................... William Ivey Long is one of the greatest costumes designers of our time. His extraordinary work in Hairspray, Chicago and other Broadway and off-Broadway plays has won him five Tony awards and twice as many nominations. His costumes are clever, original and a perfect expression of the character they are created for. The highlight in Long's career was in 2006, when he was admitted to the Theatre Hall of Fame. |

With more and more people turning their attention to our planet's growing problems, it's no wonder that the fashion industry is also doing so. Eco-safe materials, organic colouring substances and even clothes made from recycled materials are now easier to find and are becoming more and more popular with today's shoppers. |

The next time you feel frustrated because you don't have Nicole Kidman's porcelain skin, Jennifer Aniston's beautiful hair or David Beckham's muscular body, have a look through some gossip magazines. It might make you feel better to see pictures of your favourite Hollywood icons without their make-up on. Take a closer look at a star's picture that hasn't been retouched, and you'll discover that many of them are ordinary-looking people, just like you and me! |

We need energy to heat our homes, cook and clean for our families and for transport. It allows us to live a comfortable and easy life. However, if we do not use this energy properly we will soon run out. Luckily, there are things we can all do to help our planet and conserve our resources.
To begin with, much of the energy used at home goes to heating or cooling our homes. A simple way to help conserve energy is by lowering the thermostat by two degrees in the winter and raising it by two in the summer. B. doing so, you will not only lower your heating bill, but you will also reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere.
Another way you can save energy at home is by buying energy-saving appliances. Appliances like washing machines and cookers use a great deal of gas or electricity to work. When shopping for new appliances, look for the energy-saving sticker; they might be a little more expensive to buy, but they help save energy, and in the end will help you save money on your bills.
A lot of energy is used by means of transport too. One of the many ways to achieve low energy usage is to leave the car at home and catch the bus or the train to move around the city. Fewer cars in the street means less traffic and it will not only help save energy, but it will also reduce the amount of air pollution.
In the end, it is up to every individual to take responsibility and change their daily habits. If everyone does their pa-then we can help save energy and our planet's resources.
41 Everyone can participate in conserving energy and saving the planet. ........

A Symbol Of Paris
Being one of the most popular sites in the world, the Eiffel Tower attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. In fact, the structure, received its two hundredth millionth guest in 2002. Located on the Champs de Mars by the Seine River, visitors can make their way to the top and admire the breathtaking view of Paris.
The Tower was the inspiration of French engineer Gustave Eiffel. A very famous personality in his time, Eiffel had also done important work for the internal structure of another famous monument, the Statue of Liberty in the USA. Work on the Eiffel Tower began in 1887 and lasted until 1889, when the building was opened to the public during the Paris World Exposition. Until 1930 and the construction of the Chrysler Building in New York, the Tower remained the highest structure in the world.
Many people, especially artists, criticised the structure saying that this distasteful structure did not fit in with the beauty of Paris. One of these critics was the French writer Guy de Maupassant, who ate at one of the tower's restaurants almost every day, because it was the only place in Paris from where the tower was not visible, and so he wouldn't have to see it!
A lot of effort and money go into keeping the Tower in good condition. Every seven years, sixty metric tons of paint are used to repaint it. Different shades of the same colour are used on the top and darker ones on the bottom in order for the building to have an unvarying appearance.
41 Over two million people have climbed the Eiffel Tower. .........

WHITE ROOFS FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE!
The effects of global warming are becoming more and more noticeable with the passing of the years. The number of floods, storms and heatwaves has increased as a result of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that do not allow the sun's heat to escape the Earth's atmosphere. However, a simple and quite possibly effective idea has been suggested as a way to help lessen the consequences of climate change.
Professor Steven Chu, the US Energy Secretary and a Nobel Prize winner, suggests that painting our rooftops white will help the Earth's temperature to drop. The idea is that if enough surfaces - rooftops, pavements, roads - are painted white, more sunlight will reflect off these surfaces and go back into space. This will help cool our planet down.
According to scientists, if rooftops and roads were painted white it would reduce the amount of CO2 by billions of tons. This would be the same as taking every car in the world off the streets for 11 years. Not only this, but homes with white rooftops and cars that are painted white wouldn't absorb so much heat from the sun. This means that they would be cooler and people wouldn't have to turn on their air conditioners as much. Consequently, we would save more energy and reduce the amount of CO2 released in the atmosphere.
Although the idea of white rooftops has been generally welcomed by the scientific and environmental communities, there appear to be a few problems. One of these is the fact that the colour white would be too bright if it was painted on too many large surfaces. Another concern is that keeping the white surfaces in good condition for a long period of time would be too expensive.
Pessimists feel that though painting rooftops and pavements in light colours is good in theory, it is just a very small step to take towards reducing the Earth's temperature. What we must remember though, is that there is not one solution to global warming. It's the combination of different methods that will help our planet get back on its feet.
31 There has been an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in recent years. .............

Choosing the Right Gift
31 |
Imagine spending all this time, money and effort in choosing the perfect gift for your friend and as soon as she sees it, the disappointment she feels is so great that no degree of politeness on her part can hide her reaction! You'll probably feel quite embarrassed, and she is likely to feel quite awkward too, because of her reaction. Well, there are certain things you can do to avoid such embarrassment. |
32 |
To begin with, it is said that mothers, sisters, girlfriends, daughters and so on are more difficult to shop for, so do a little research before making your choice of gift. Pay attention to what the girl or lady you want to buy a gift for usually buys for herself. Think of her hobbies and interests or ask her to describe some of the best gifts she's ever received. These should lead you towards a good choice. |
33 |
Next, come the young generation. Buying a gift for a toddler or a child is as easy as choosing something for your adolescent friend or relative. After all, kidsneed toys and clothes while teens are happy with CDs or a pair of trendy jeans, right? Not necessarily! The little ones usually end up with too many toys or clothes, and teens go through so many mood swings and changes that you never know what makes them happy. Again, just ask what they'd like' |
34 |
Of course, choosing the right present doesn't have to be so stressful. What matters is not the amount of money that goes into your gift but whether your choice reflects your feelings for the person who receives it. Buying a pricey stereo or piece c-jewellery may not be fully appreciated if they are just displays of wealth rather than thoughtfulness. |
35 |
Naturally, there will be times when you simply don't know what to choose. If that's the case, the simple:: way to avoid giving the wrong present or worrying too much about what to choose is a gift certificate or something more general, like a big bunch of flowers or a nice box of chocolates. Presents like that are most often welcome, so you can't really go wrong! |

A. Carnegie Deli
B. Borsch
C. A Subway in New York
D. One of the Big Apple’s Attraction
E. New York’s Attractions
1. If you want to see the Big Apple, you can do this in a cheap, fast and easy way. You should only buy a Metro Card at any subway station. Metro Cards on a pay-per-ride basis can be used by groups of up to four people. If your visit is short, Metro Cards can help you get the most famous attractions including the Big Apple’s mega star The Empire State Building quickly enough.
2. The Carnegie Deli is an important New York attraction. It is famous for its huge portions of food. The word “deli” comes from German and means delicatessen . The Carnegie Deli is very popular. This deli has great blintzes(sorts of pan-cakes) but it also has amazing sandwiches. The service is very quick and friendly though the place isn’t big enough for all the people who want to eat there.
3 It is one of the most popular dishes in Russia. The recipe of the dish is known from the end of the 18th century. It is a kind of soup. Beetroot is its main ingredient and the soup got its name from it. Nowadays it is made with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and meat. On hot summer days it is often made without meat.
4. Broadway is one of the most famous avenue in Manhattan. A small area near Times Square where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue is the home of many Broadway’s theatres. It also is known as the Great White Way. You can get there by the Big Apple’s subway as well as to the Guggenheim Museum or to Whitehall Street to catch the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty.
5. I like desserts in the Carnegie Deli, so I usually order blintzes. The portion is huge there, but I can eat all by myself. Sometimes I order the Great White Way with sour cream. However I usually prefer Carnegie blintzes with strawberry or cherry. I recommend this deli but there are some disadvantages: you share a table with strangers and you can’t sit for too long.

The American Gold Rush
It all started early in 1848 in California. James W. Marshall was working by the riverside when he found some small pieces of yellow metal in the water. He showed them to his boss. It was gold. The two men tried to keep this discovery a secret but without success. Soon, the magic word ‘gold’ was repeated all around the world. Everybody wanted to go to California to get rich. Thousands of people started to rush to the golden river by horse, by ship and even on foot. Night after night, a few more new towns appeared along the river. Some people brought tents to live in while others built wooden houses called huts. Looking for gold was hard work and many people were disappointed. Only the lucky ones found gold – sometimes up to $2,000 in one day. It is not surprising that many small hotels, restaurants and bars opened in the new towns. Their owners made fortunes providing services to people who arrived in town in search of gold. By the end of 1850, the California Gold Rush was over. However, about forty-seven years later gold was discovered again, this time in Canada. Once more, over a thousand people left their homes and families to look for a better future. Today, at the original site of the California Gold Rush, near Sacramento, visitors can still try their luck with finding the yellow pieces of metal in the river. The old buildings have been redecorated and tourists can experience the life of the old days. Many of them are sure that they can find at least a small bit of gold.
