Аbout Yakhin Rustem (О Рустаме Яхине)

Nowadays it is impossible to find any information about R. Yakhin in the English language. That is why we decided to translate some material about him and use it in our lessons. While searching for the information we’ve learnt that Rustam Yakhin’s music is full of energy, enthusiasm, extravagance, and at the same time it is very lyrical, melodic and beautiful. For example, after listening to the State Anthem of the Republic of Tatarstan, which was composed by Rustem Yakhin, we start to feel pride and confidence. It’s the musical symbol, which clearly shows multinational, multi-confessional Tatarstan, where the two state languages Tatar and Russian have equal rights. 

Yakhin Rustem Mukhametkhazeevich was born on the 16th of August in 1921 in the city of Kazan.  He started practicing music at the age of 13. Yakhin graduated from the Children's Music school №1 in Kazan in a short – cut period of time and in 1937 he entered the Moscow Conservatory. He was a very talented and persistent student, but the WWII interrupted his studies. In 1942 he was called to the Red Army, where he showed himself as very brave and courageous, so that he got lots of awards and medals. In 1945 Yakhin was demobilized from the army.

Once again he admitted to the Moscow Conservatory. After graduating in 1950 he started teaching in the Kazan State Conservatory. He became very famous as a Tatar composer and pianist.  At the beginning of his career Yakhin mainly performed the works of Russian and West-European classics, but then, he focused on performing his own works.

R. M. Yakhin harmoniously tried to link his music with the national folklore. The composer expanded the boundaries of the Tatar music, by adding traditions of P. I. Tchaikovsky and S. Rachmaninoff, European romantics of the XIX century, the Impressionists. Yakhin’s major works are orchestra with piano concerto (1950–1952), ballet Fidai (1987), fortepiano and viola concertos, more than 300 songs and romances. The style of his music was created by himself. Rustem Yakhin was a laureate of the Gabdulla Tuqay Tatar ASSR State Prize in 1959. He was also given an honorary title such as People's Artist of the USSR (1986).

We can describe Yakhin as being a gifted composer and pianist, whose individuality is strongly shown on all his works, a wonderful person, with whom it is so good to deal with. He shocked other composers by his extraordinary, beautiful and poetic music.

Rustam Yakhin died on the 23rd of November in 1993 and was buried at the Memorial Yana-Tatar Bistase (Novotatarskoye) cemetery.
