The USA geographical outlook

There are 50 states in the USA. Alaska and Hawaii are not connected to other states. The capital is Washington. Main cities are New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

The USA is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west, by the Atlantic ocean in the east, by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico in the south. Great lakes are in the north of the country.

Its climate varies greatly from cold and snowy Alaska to sunny and warm Florida.

Also it has many kinds of land: rocky coasts, empty deserts, big rivers, wide plains, great lakes, high mountains , big forests and sunny beaches.

Many rivers cross the USA.  The greatest river is the Mississippi river (”father of the waters). It is nearly 6400 km long. Other big rivers are the Colorado and the Missouri. The big mountain chains there are the Rocky mountains and the Appalachians.

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s main tourist attractions. The Colorado river formed it over millions of years. Today the Canyon is 320km long.

The USA is a young country. More than 300 mln people live there. The people of the USA are a mixture of many different nationalities ( it’s a big melting pot). In the past people from different countries went to America to find better life and they formed one country. These different people brought their customs and traditions. The Germans brought Christmas trees, the Irish brought St. Patrick’s  Day celebrations, the Scots brought Halloween.
